New Field ES Weekly Updates
Week 28: March 18-22, 2024
Q3 Ends, GoCPS SY25 Application Results & Spring Break Begins Friday!
Dear New Field families,
We are in the twentieth-eighth week of school and at the close of the third quarter. It's incredible to think that we have only 10 short weeks left in the school year upon our return from Spring Break! Teachers will finalize third quarter grades this week, you can expect to receive report cards on Wednesday, April 10 on report card conference day. Report card conferences will run from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM and 4:00 -6:00 PM. Teachers will share information on conference scheduling upon our return from Spring Break. Our school and offices will be closed Monday, March 25 - Monday, April 1. Students return from spring break on Tuesday, April 2.
On Friday, March 22 families will also receive email notifications about their SY2024-2025 Elementary Application results. This is particularly relevant for our out-of-area PK families that would like to continue at New Field for Kindergarten and for any fourth grade families that applied to schools other than their neighborhood schools. Families have until Friday, April 12 to accept or decline Round 1 offers. Please note that New Field offices will be closed March 25 - April 1.
When we return from Spring Break we have many exciting learning experiences, family engagement events and opportunities and we begin looking ahead to school year 2024-2025.
A few important things to expect in April:
- K-4 students will begin taking bussed field trips, consider volunteering as a chaperone! Check our Google Calendar for your child's grade-level field trip.
- Third Quarter Award Assemblies are scheduled for Friday, April 5. Invitations will be shared on Tuesday, April 2.
- SY2024-2025 Budget Planning will occur. Principal Callahan will share a stakeholder survey in the April newsletters for families to provide input on our most important financial investments.

Interested in Chaperoning a Field Trip? Sign up to be a Level II Volunteer
Field trips are a wonderful opportunity for experiential learning, to broaden our perspective and worldview and to have fun together exploring our incredible city.
Field trips are made possible by YOU when you serve as a chaperone in your child's classroom.
In order to chaperone, CPS requires that parents go through the application process to become an approved Level 2 Volunteer. See below for the required steps to becoming an approved parent volunteer.
Step 1: Fill out the online application form: (Scroll down and click on "View Application")
School Organization: New Field School
Volunteer Type: Level II
Coaching: No
Type of volunteer: Parent/Guardian Volunteer
Step 2: Bring a photo ID (driver's license, passport, library card, etc) to Ms. Briggs in the main office and let her know that you are applying to be a Level 2 volunteer. Please be sure to share your child's name and classroom number. You can also email this to Ms. Briggs at: sschmauderer-bri@cps.edu
The ID may be from another country, as long as it has a photo and name. Sue will photocopy it and submit it. Approval typically takes a 3-5 business days.
We hope you can join us on an upcoming field trip or another school-based event.
Outside Food & Snacks at Lunch
New Field follows the CPS Healthy Schools Policy and we teach nutrition and healthy habits as part of our holistic approach to education. Families, we need your help! Please only send healthy snacks and food for lunches. Unfortunately we have seen a large increase in sugary drinks and snacks. Please help us maintain a healthy school environment and refrain from sending children to school with sugary, processed foods and drinks. Please consult with your classroom teacher if you have any questions.
Click below to access our healthy snacks list. Please be aware that this is also the approved snack list for all birthday parties and classroom celebrations.
Pedestrian and Car Safety Reminders
Drop off and pickup can be a hectic time. This is why we have a staggered arrival and dismissal schedule.
As adults, it is important that we model positive community, healthy conflict resolution and safe pedestrian practices for our children. They watch and learn from our choices and behaviors.
Please keep these important guidelines in mind:
- Walk to school as often as possible! We are a neighborhood school which means we are walkable for most families. Walking is great exercise, a wonderful opportunity for discussion/observation and super helpful for our environment!
- When driving, use car seats when applicable and follow guidelines on height and weight recommendations for children sitting in front seats.
- When walking, cross at crosswalks only
- Do not double or triple park on Morse Ave. This increases dangerous vehicular behavior
- Follow traffic rules. Do not pull a u-turn or make an illegal turn near school grounds
- Remember that over 580 young children are entering and exiting school grounds. Model calm and respectful conflict management should it arise.
