Message from the Superintendent
Honoring Labor Day
Schools will be closed Monday in honor of Labor Day. All classes will resume Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Opening New Palisades World Language School
Health & Safety Protocols Discussed in Detail
At the School Board meeting Tuesday, the superintendent provided an extensive update on LOSD's mitigation protocols to minimize exposure and reduce the potential for spread in our schools. The update focused on the topics that have been coming into the board as questions: lunch, quarantining, vaccination status, testing, back to school nights, and air filtration. To listen to the full report, click here for a recording of the public session under Meetings, Available Achieves.
For what happens when a student or adult is quarantined, please review: LOSD Quarantine Plan. This plan and other information about LOSD health and safety protocols can be found on the district website under Roadmap to Reopening.
Diagnostic and Screening Testing Available
In addition to the in-school mitigation measures, LOSD is helping facilitate two types of testing in partnership with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). All testing is voluntary and requires active permission.
- Diagnostic testing is for students and staff who show the primary symptoms of COVID-19 while at school or are exposed to COVID-19.
- Screening testing is designed to detect COVID-19 in people who do not show symptoms. Our staff was given the instructions to sign up last week, and OHSU says they will be ready for students the week of September 20.
We will highly encourage all unvaccinated students to participate in the screening testing through OHSU. We will require unvaccinated staff who have an exemption to participate in weekly testing.
Five Back to School Safety Tips
No Bus Passes for Play Dates
In an effort to manage bus capacity and COVID-19 protocols, our schools are not able to accept bus pass requests for play dates. If a parent-guardians has a childcare arrangement, that is allowed with a signed note from the parent-guardian. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Please click here for information about the bus transportation situation.
Nutrition Services Breakfast Service Update
Thank you LOSD parents-guardians for participating in our free breakfast and lunch meal programs. We made a change to our take-home breakfast process and want to share it with you. In the morning your student can order a breakfast meal with their teacher. It will then be delivered near the end of the day. No need to order lunch in order to receive a breakfast meal.
We also want to let you know that due to supply and staffing issues there may be changes to our menu next week. We will do our best to substitute a menu item for a similar option when available. LOSD Nutrition Services is hiring! Please click here to check our available postings on the following link.
iReady This Fall
This Fall, all students in Grades 1-8 will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth. This is the first of three i-Ready assessments we give each year, and results will be shared with parents in October.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s skill level. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.
Your school will be sending out a message with specific dates and information about i-Ready.
Lifeguards Needed

Verify Student Info Before Returning to School
LOSD needs parents-guardians of all students enrolled for the 2021-22 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, contact your student's school.
