Curriculum Updates
Mathematics
Math: This week students practiced: using manipulatives and drawings to represent two-digit and three-digit addition. They have been practicing the vertical algorithm method for addition and are enjoying it! Subtraction of two-digit numbers was introduced and we have had lots of practice building and solving. They have been working in partnerships and small groups to transfer the building and solving to building, drawing and solving. Next week we will begin using the vertical algorithm method for subtraction. They continue to work to improve their fluency, with sprints, and their problem solving skills , with application problems. After listening to and/or reading word problems, students figure out which strategy would be the best for the situation.
Reading & Writing
Reading: Readers have been using their skills in reading to help them infer about characters. They have been noticing how events in stories cause characters to change. When we notice characters feelings, it helps us understand our characters and the story. Readers continue to use Post-its independently to jot down their thoughts and inferences about their characters while reading. We have enjoyed a shared reading of Koala Lou by Mem Fox and the students were excellent inferring detectives. From all our inferences about Koala Lou, we were able to come up with a number of personality//character traits about Koala Lou.
Writing: Students continued writing realistic fiction stories. We’ve been noticing how authors show not tell by reading books from the Pinky and Rex series along with other mentor texts (Enemy Pie, Jamaica Tag Along, Koala Lou). They have been looking at stretching out the problem part of their story by using show not tell. We often spend the last few minutes of a lesson listening to one of our classmates share either a part of their story, or time permitting, perhaps the entire story. We will be working on the endings of their stores this week as well as continuing to add more show not tell to make our stories even better.
Science
Science: This week was our last week of our Weather Unit. Students visited the science lab to compete in a Meteorologist Marathon where they practiced reading thermometers and rain gauges. They also practiced identifying clouds, weather situations, and wind damage using the Beaufort scale. The week ended with our weather assessment. We look forward to our next social studies unit which will be Qatar Then and Now.
