The Shasta County Office of Education (SCOE) is pleased to host the Shasta County Spelling Bee 2024 competition! The spelling bee is open for Shasta County students in grades 4-9.
SCOE will host two county spelling bees:
● Shasta County Elementary Spelling Bee (Grades 4-6) will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at the McLaughlin Theatre at Sequoia Middle School. Check-in begins at 12:30 pm here with the competition beginning promptly at 1:00 pm
● Shasta County Junior High Spelling Bee (Grades 7-9) will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at the McLaughlin Theatre at Sequoia Middle School. Check-in begins at 12:30 pm with the competition beginning promptly at 1:00 pm
To Qualify for the Spelling Bees: It is up to each school staff to determine how they select their participants for the county bees; any competition a school uses to determine the spellers that will advance to the county bees is acceptable. Schools with students in grades 4, 5 and/or 6 may send two students to the elementary bee and schools with students in grades 7, 8 and/or 9 may send two students to the junior high bee. Schools that have
students in grades 4-8, or any other combination of elementary & junior high grades, may send two students to the elementary bee and two students to the junior high bee.
Winners: Each of the county competitions will have two winners. The Shasta County Elementary Spelling Bee winner will advance to the California State Elementary Spelling Bee on April 27, 2024 in San Joaquin County starting at 7:45 am. The Shasta County Junior High Spelling Bee winner will advance to the California State Junior High Spelling Bee on Saturday, April 27, 2024 in San Joaquin County starting at 1:45 pm.
Participation: Registration is being done solely online. If your school would like to participate in one, or both, of the Shasta County Spelling Bees, please register your students here or visit our website for more information. There is a registration fee of $25.00 per speller. Please note students will not be allowed to compete in the bee unless registration forms and the registration fee have been submitted by Friday, March 4, 2024.
Spelling lists will be available by email request or by visiting https://www.shastacoe.org/families/student-events/shasta-county-spelling-bee If you have any further questions or concerns please contact Melissa Wetzel 530-232-0034 or instructionalservices@shastacoe.org.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based program that students at Stellar Charter School have access to in order to monitor reading practice and progress. Students take short quizzes after reading a book to check for comprehension and reach their reading goals.
How are AR Goals set?
Grades K-1: AR uses a points goal system for students in grades K-1 that will be assigned a goal each semester according to their grade and suggested daily reading is 15 minutes.
Grades 2-8: AR uses a points goal system that will be generated by the STAR assessment they take at the beginning of the year and at benchmark periods throughout the year. Reading will be between 15-30 minutes a day depending on grade level.
Grades 9-12: AR uses a points goal system that will be generated by STAR assessments they take at the beginning of the year and at benchmark periods throughout the year. Reading will be 30 minutes a day.
How many points do books earn? Students can earn points for every book they read. The number of points is based on a book’s length and difficulty.
How can students earn points? Students earn points when they take a quiz for each book. Passing a quiz requires a score of at least 80%. However, if they score higher than 60 percent on the quiz, they receive a fraction of the total points they could earn from it.
Get recognized for reading! At Stellar, all students who reach their goal each semester will receive special recognition with their name displayed in the breezeway. Students in K-8th will be given a prize and students in 9-12th will be eligible for rewards for a gift certificate to Dutch Bros or In-N-Out.
Please contact Mrs.Murphy by emailing (jmurphy@rsdnmp.org ) or coming by the library if you have any questions.
