Love Your Library this September
Events to love at your library in September
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an exciting new program for any child from birth through preschool. The goal is straightforward: read 1000 books before starting kindergarten! For every 100 books read, children will receive a small reward. Visiting the library during children's programming, such as Wednesday morning story time, is a great way to increase your child's love of literature and add more books to their reading log. Whether you read one book each day or ten, your child will benefit from the time you spend reading together. Registration will begin Wednesday, September 6th.

Springville Public Library Loves Local Artist Merle Dollar
Merle became passionate about art as an elementary school student where she was, "nurtured by a wonderfully gifted group of teachers who introduced her to visual arts, music, literature, and drama." She feels that, "there is something in the water here that feeds the artistic soul!" Merle used her BS in Art Education to become a high school art teacher. She taught for 25 years in Pell City and Springville and retired in 2005.
After retiring, Merle "went straight to work at her other love, Local Color Cafe, which she owns with her husband, Garry Burttram. This wonderful little venue gave her a place to continue painting and teaching classes." Merle taught art lessons on painting techniques and color theory from 2008-2013. Local Color has also "been her Gallery for showcasing her larger pieces" and she also has "smaller pieces in the ladies room, which sell right off the wall many a night." She likes to joke: "If you want it to sell, put it in the Ladies Room!"
Music has always been a passion for Merle. She has starred in musical theater productions of Oklahoma, South Pacific and Sound of Music. Merle confesses that "her
greatest joy is singing with her cousin Peggy Jones and sister-in-law Sylvia Waid in the iconic, Something Else Trio." These ladies have shared the stage at the Local Color Cafe every weekend weekend since its opening in 2002. The group is excited about their upcoming Christmas Concerts in December at the Leeds Arts Council Theater and at the Lyric Theater with Three on a String. Merle and Gary are also preparing for a joint art show next year at the Joy Gallery in Homewood. She loves collaborating with her husband and says "having a fellow artist in residence is marvelous!".
