News from Eli Terry
Week of September 8th, 2023
Next week, we're moving our "Terrier Tuesday" to Wednesday because....
Eli Terry will be celebrating National Terrier Day NEXT Wednesday, March 27th thanks to the idea, planning, and leadership shown by Emma Army (4th grader)!
We're inviting our entire school community to come dressed in their best Eli Terry sprit-wear, in green, yellow and/or anything with DOGS on it!! Students and teachers with the most terrier spirit will get to choose from terrier-themed prizes!
Not only do we want to plan something fun for our school community, but we want to have a positive impact on our larger community! As a result, we will also be having a pet supply drive to help the Tyler Regional Animal Shelter (also known as TRACS) right here in South Windsor. The Pet Supply Drive will begin next Monday, March 25th and end Thursday, March 28th. There will be boxes in front of the office to put donations in. The DOGS thank you in advance!
The shelter would love donations of:
- Towels or blankets (clean - but not necessarily new)
- Unopened bags of dry food (brands like Pedigree Dry & Purina Proplan Sensitive Skin)
- Wet food
- Small training treats
- Cleaning supplies (Lysol wipes, Lysol or general cleaning supplies)
The Dogs would love:
- Pork Chomps
- large rib bones
- large bully sticks
- Busy Bones, Nylabones, or Benebones
- hard Jolly plastic balls
- rubber chew toys of various sizes
- "snuffle mats"
There will be games, read-alouds, and surprises throughout the day to celebrate Terrier Day!
A Note from Your Principals
One of the guiding documents for our work at Eli Terry is the South Windsor Public School's "Portrait of a Graduate". This document outlines not only what we hope our students will exemplify not only when they graduate high school, but throughout their entire educational journey.
The pillars of this document are: engaged, empowered, socially conscious, and resilient.
We are so proud of how our students bring these pillars to life each and every day but wanted to highlight how a student's idea and partnership with the Ambassador team, for National Terrier Day, brings the PoG to life!
ENGAGED
Engaged learners act on their intrinsic curiosity, explore their passions, and act with a sense of purpose. They ask, "How does this work?" "What can I do with this?" and "How can I make this better?"
I can...
• Use my VOICE to express my sense of purpose, to structure my work and ideas, and to communicate my insights and knowledge publicly
• Pursue AUTHENTIC learning opportunities that allow me to make a genuine difference
EMPOWERED
Empowered people apply their knowledge and skills as active members of their community. They take on meaningful causes, and strive to make a positive impact.
I can...
•Access, analyze, and evaluate information in order to make informed decisions
•Take initiative and self-directed actions to solve problems
•Strive to improve our world
•Use technology and media in a safe and respectful manner
SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS
Socially conscious citizens are aware of the needs of others and take action as members of local, national, and global communities.
I can...
•Demonstrate kindness, compassion, empathy, and ethical behavior
RESILIENT
Individuals who practice resilience have an "I-can-do-it" attitude that allows them to persevere through challenging and ever-changing circumstances.
I can...
•Approach problems with a growth mindset and confidence
•Take intellectual risks in pursuit of learning
Down Syndrome Awareness Day
On Thursday, Eli Terry students and staff celebrated Down Syndrome Awareness Day with “Rock Your Socks” day. Staff and students were encouraged to wear extra socks or bold, bright crazy socks as well as blue and yellow to school in honor of the extra chromosome.
In addition, Mrs. Hooley, one of our EIP teachers, created the slide deck below that was shared in each classroom to help bring attention to Down Syndrome. We're sharing here in case you want to raise awareness and celebrate the extra chromosome at home!
Sarah Week's Author Visit
On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming author Sarah Weeks to Eli Terry. The students were absolutely thrilled to have her visit and share her passion for storytelling with us. Her interactive sessions inspired students, fostering a deeper appreciation for literature and creativity.
A BIG thank you to the PTO and South Windsor Public Schools for funding this amazing opportunity!
GR3-5 SBAC/NGSS Testing Schedule
Grade 3-5 Families...Please mark your calendars for the specific days/times we'll be SBAC/NGSS testing. We ask that you try to avoid absences and disruptions to your child's daily schedule during these days/times.
2024-25 Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten registration opened on Monday February 5th. If you have an incoming Kindergartner, or know someone who does, please share this information!
Below are the documents that are either posted on the website or given to Grade K parents electronically once they are fully registered.
We look forward to welcoming all our new Kindergarten Terriers!
Shout outs are a great way to express gratitude towards those who have made a positive impact in our lives. Whether it's a staff member, friend, student, or colleague, taking a moment to acknowledge and appreciate their contributions can strengthen relationships and bring our ET community closer together.
So, if you're feeling thankful for someone in your or your child's life, don't hesitate to give them a shout out! Go ahead, spread some love and appreciation to those who matter most to you.
A Peek Inside Our Week
2nd graders in Mrs. St. Amour's class had a busy week playing math games and sharing their book reviews!
Robbie Caless, incoming Kindergartner, was put to work when he came to read in his brother's class!
3rd grader Landon Semenuk read to his bus mates while waiting during dismissal!
The "puppy love" PAWS raffle prize was another big hit! We even got to celebrate Riley, the golden retriever, on her birthday!
In music this week, third grader Ian Yoon conducted a recorder lesson for his class, and second grader Faris Siddiqui taught his class about Eid and Ramadan!
A 5th grade book club hard at work!
Thursday's Math Night
Wow, what a math night!
Thank you to each of you who joined us on Thursday. It was wonderful to see our Cafeteria, Library, and hallways buzzing with math talk. What could be better than an opportunity for our students to show their parents, grandparents, and siblings all they have learned in math this year. Their strategies, enthusiasm, and higher-level thinking was amazing! We appreciate your dedication to our partnership and your child's success!
