Solar Eclipse Safety
A solar eclipse is when the moon is directly in the path of the sun. It will make the middle of the day look like nighttime. Because the moon will not cover the entire sun, there will be a halo, or ring around the moon. To look at this ring could cause damage to the eyes, and could be temporary or permanent, and the results could not be known until days or weeks later.
Because of this safety concern, schools all around Indiana will be closing. For PLA@PromisePrep, we will be closing school and instituting a learn from home day. Your scholars will receive a packet that will need to be completed. When the packet is completed and returned, the scholar will then be marked present.
Since this is a once in a lifetime experience, many people will be treating this as a celebration. Like any celebration, it is always best if it is safe. Below are some safety suggestions for observing the Solar Eclipse:
1. NEVER look directly into the sun, but especially during an eclipse.
2. The only way to safely observe a solar eclipse is through protective eye wear.
3. Only purchase safety glasses that are ISO 12312-2 standard.
4. Wear the safety glasses at all times leading up the eclipse and until the moon has completely moved through the sun.
We hope you can enjoy this once in a lifetime event safely.
State Testing
Testing Season
NWEA- January and May
ILEARN- Late April, Early May- 3rd and 4th grade only
These tests are not like a classroom tests. They are standardized tests and will cover the knowledge that the scholars have learned over the year.
What can scholars do to prepare for these tests? There is nothing really to study, but they can get a good night sleep, have a protein packed breakfast, show up to school, every day, and on time. Look for specific dates and times, as we get closer to the testing dates.

Seasonal Weather
It is that time of year, in the state of Indiana, where the weather can drastically change from day to day, even hour to hour. This last week has had some cool mornings and warm afternoons and evenings. As these weather changes occur, it takes time for our building to heat up or cool down. We recommend that you dress your scholars in layers.
For the cool mornings, the scholars might need a sweatshirt or jacket, but the afternoons could require just a short sleeved shirt. We ask that you make sure that all the layers are uniform appropriate. If a scholar is wearing a t-shirt under a sweatshirt, and it gets warm, the scholar will not be able to remove the sweatshirt if they do not have a uniform appropriate shirt on underneath.
Also, as the schoars layer down, often times, they are forgetful and might leave a sweatshirt or jacket behind. Please make sure all scholar uniforms are labeled. We recommend that you put the grade your scholar is in, and the inititals, in the event they misplace something, it can be returned to its rightful owner.
A Thought from Principal Mayer
This week's note is a simple thank you to the scholars, families, and teachers that worked hard to make sure our scholars had success on IREAD. We thank parents for getting scholars to bed early, feading them a healthy breakfast, and transporting them to school on time.
Thank you to the entire staff that had to teach the scholars the materials, administer the test, and rearrange schedules to make sure our scholars had a quiet place to take the test.
Finally, thank you to the scholars for showing up on time and working their very best to have IREAD success. We will ge our results in the next couple of weeks and will share them with families after we have processed the data.
Our next round of standardized testing takes place the last two weeks of April and the beginning of May.
Have a great week.
