St Bernadette's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 3 | WEEK 3 | 5 August 2022
Message from Geordie
Good afternoon families,
This week I am very happy to report that I have managed to get around and spend a fair bit of time with students and teachers in classrooms, even spending this morning teaching in Year 5 Blue! I had the opportunity to hear some of the new songs being learnt during our Whole School Singing, learnt about the Scratch Coding Program in Year 2 Digital Technologies, and did some Cross-Country Training with Year 3-6.
This week we also had our School Advisory Council Meeting and received an update on our Master Plan that continues to progress. Tony from EIW Architects and I met with a landscape architect last week discuss how the outdoor spaces can be upgraded and integrated through the design. The goal is still to have a final Master Plan ready by Term 4.
A reminder that as part of our focus on regular communication, we will be conducting our second Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday the 6th September (Week 8) from 12.30pm. Students will finish at 12pm, allowing staff time for lunch before starting their interviews. We will be sending out the digital booking link in the newsletter next Friday so that parents can make a time that suits them.
While these formal interviews are an important part of the reporting schedule, I remind parents that regular communication is welcomed and that if you ever feel that you need clarification, need to discuss your child’s progress or if there is something specific the teacher needs to know about your child, please organise a time to meet or send an email through the office. Many of our parents do this well, however, I have had a few conversations this week where parents have felt ‘bad’ about asking to meet a teacher. Please don’t, we want to build relationships with our parents!
Finally, I have a very large favour to ask of our families. As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, wellbeing and engagement at St Bernadette’s, we are conducting a School Climate Survey in our community. This is important data to collect from students, staff and families and helps to gauge the climate of the school and where we might focus our energy to improve. We would like to hear from as many parents as possible so please use the documents and the link below to complete the survey. I would like to reassure everyone that your responses will remain anonymous and is collected by an independent organisation in the interest of overall school improvement.
I hope you have a great weekend and look forward to another great week.

Principal

Languages Week! Coming up in Week 7
Happy Languages Week - celebrating the linguistic diversity in our community. Did you know that we have many families that speak a second language at home and come from over 20 different countries here at St Bernadette's?
There are also over 240 languages and dialects spoken in Western Australia. Our teachers celebrate their diversity as many of us come different places around the world. Mrs Cairns is from Scottland as is Mrs Murphy, Mrs Wall and Mrs Poasa are from New Zealand and Mr Murtagh and Mrs Nagle are from Ireland, just to name a few.
Languages week is held in August every year and is designed to raise awareness and highlight the benefits of learning a language. Here at St Bernie's we learn Bahasa Indonesian and welcome all cultures. We are becoming increasingly connected as a community with our Balinese Sister School and as overseas travel is re-igniting, they invite our families to visit them in Mengwi, Badung, Bali (approx 30mins from Denpasar). Please email admin if you are ever interested in a visit to our Sister School and Ibu Kristy will help co-ordinate this.
Learning a language is an essential skill for our students and Ibu Kristy and the Year 6 students will proudly celebrate our own Languages week, filled with lots of Indonesian activities during Week 7 - please see the flyers below!
