HES Happenings
Where our Monomoy students are 'fin'tastic!
OCTOBER 14, 2016
HOT OFF THE PRESS...WE ARE 'FIN'TASTIC'!...all 33 classrooms have filled their fishbowls 5 times. That's 18,150 acts of being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE AND READY TO LEARN BEHAVIORS IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOMS since the first day of school!
"Music Counts Every Day" at HES - The Composer and Composition that we will be listening to every morning as we get the day started at HES next week will be "Clarinet Concerto:Second Movement" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
This week we turn our attention to the Austrian composer Mozart. He wrote many concertos during his short life – 0nly 36 years. This year we celebrate the two hundred and sixtieth anniversary of his birth. Mozart wrote concertos for most musical instruments and his piano concertos are probably the most famous of his works. A concerto is a piece of music written for a solo instrument with an orchestra accompaniment. The concerto this week was the last one that he wrote.
The question this week is: What is the solo instrument in this piece of music?
Answers to your teachers by Friday. Correct answers, as usual, will get 2 bubbles………….
Here is the link to the music.

The students were randomly grouped with two students from each class, and were challenged with building the tallest tower they could...out of spaghetti and marshmallows! Lots of fun, teamwork, and critical thinking!

"HESnapshot" - The featured staff of the week at HES
Melissa Brady - Kindrgarten Classroom Teacher
I am proud to say I have spent my entire career at HES and have been a teacher here for the past 31 years. My first job was as a special education assistant and I am currently in my 28 th year teaching kindergarten. I grew up in Ramsey, New Jersey and obtained my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Foreign Languages from Elmira College in Elmira, NY. I moved to Cape Cod three days after my college graduation and never left! I later received a Masters of Education as a Reading Specialist from Bridgewater State University. I have been married for 26 years, have one daughter and am the “Mimi” to three wonderful granddaughters. I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling and summers on the lovely Finger Lakes of New York State. From the time I was 5 years old I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I feel privileged to have shared the wonder of learning with so many kindergarteners. The joy in a child’s eyes when they feel a sense of accomplishment is amazing. Thank you HES families for sharing your precious children with me.
Amy Silvester - Kindrgarten Classroom Teacher
I grew up in CT and received my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Keene State College in NH. My master’s degree in Early Childhood Education was completed through Wheelock College. This is my 2nd year teaching kindergarten and I’m loving it! I spent the 3 previous years working at Chatham Elementary. I live in Chatham with my husband and daughters Emily (9) and Maddie (13). One of my favorite things to do is to go to their sporting events and watch them do what they love. I also enjoy running and am getting into competing in triathlons. I’ve completed 3 so far. Traveling, spending time at the beach, and camping (especially on Nauset’s Outer Beach) are some of ways I like to spend my free time. I am so fortunate to be teaching at HES. Each day working with young children brings me joy.
Cheryl Grady - Kindrgarten Special Education Teacher
I grew up in Fall River Massachusetts with my five brothers and sisters. I was lucky enough to spend most of my summers, first as a camper and then a counselor, at Pleasant Bay Camp in South Orleans, Massachusetts. My early camp experiences helped me to recognize my passion for working with children and my love for Cape Cod. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree: major in Child Development and Elementary Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5 teaching certificate from Connecticut College in 1980. With this degree in hand I began working at the Family School in Brewster Massachusetts the first year they opened. At this time I was also raising two daughters and working with my husband in our spare time to renovate our antique Cape house. At the Family School I experienced teaching children at all Early Childhood developmental levels including; toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten students. I also developed my leadership skills by becoming certified as a Director. This certification allowed me to become Brewster Day Camps camp director, a role I continued to hold until 1998 when I completed my Masters in Special Education Pre-K- Grade 9 at Bridgewater State College. Since receiving my Masters in Special Education, 18 years ago, I have been the Kindergarten Special Education Teacher at Harwich Elementary School. I am thrilled to come to school each day and work hands on with children and teachers to assure that each student receives a supportive learning environment and the individual supports they require to be successful learners. When I am not at work I enjoy spending time with my family both on Cape Cod and in Naples Florida where my oldest daughter and two grandchildren 2 years and 1 month old live.
