Tales From the Principal…
I want to take a moment first to update you about the practices Ridgeview is following and that we’re stressing as it relates to Coronavirus and general student and staff well-being. With the guidance of our district leaders who are communicating with us and the community consistently, we’re re-enforcing and enabling healthy habits and a clean environment at Ridgeview. We know from health experts that the best practice to combat any illness is effective hand-washing practices and in the case of schools is unhealthy students and staff staying home until they are healthy. Our custodial team has started a new regime of monitoring our student bathrooms for stocked hand soap as well as the hand-sanitizer stations that are outside of student restrooms. We’ve provided each teacher with sanitary wipes, hand sanitizer, and tissue. Our custodial crews are using effective cleaning practices each evening to keep our building as clean as possible.
Looking back at February we had a month full of unique community moments, incredible opportunities for our students, and events that highlighted some of the best of Ridgeview.
The Ridgeview Music Showcase performed in the prestigious Byer’s Theatre of City Springs was an incredible night. Our band, chorus, and orchestra students serenaded the almost 700-member audience with phenomenal music which truly showcased one of Ridgeview’s hallmarks which is our renowned music program. Mayor Rusty Paul, City Councilman Andy Bauman, several corporate sponsors, Board Member Gail Dean, and Interim Area Superintendent Eric Hollinhead all attended, and our students absolutely made an ever-lasting impression. I cannot thank our fearless directors, our Ridgeview Foundation, and the donation of an anonymous community member enough for enabling us to provide this opportunity for all involved. We also highlighted our model instructional strategies for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading in an AVID Showcase on February 25th to educators from Cobb County, DeKalb County, and local public charter schools.
Our Black History Month activities were a phenomenal celebration. The assembly, door decorating contest, trivia, and lessons were stellar – but we held our first ever Ridgeview’s Got Talent Show and Soul Food Dinner which were both amazing, and the evening made over $1,200 to donate to the United Negro College Fund.
Finally, our girls A-team led by Coach Kim Lloyd played an amazing season and ended with a 2nd place finish in the Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference.
As we head into March, we’re excited for our upcoming IB Showcase and Global Exhibition on March 10th, an opportunity for stakeholder input on March 12th, deep professional learning on March 16th (remember students have no school on 3/13 for a teacher work day and on 3/16 for our RFF professional learning day and on 3/24 for a digital learning elections day), and maximizing our remaining instructional time preparing for upcoming Georgia Milestones Assessments in late April and early May.
This month I hope you’ll join me in a few celebrations. Once again in case you missed it we are proud to celebrate our Teacher and Professional of the year. Our Teacher of the Year is Senior Micah Tucker, 8th grade Spanish teacher and World Language Department Chairperson. Our Professional of the year is Mr. Greg Brown, day-time custodian. In March these staff members are celebrating birthdays: Dr. Mills (1), Ms. Dolan (3), Ms. Hutchins (6), Ms. Janssen and Ms. Shepherd (11), Mr. Young (12), Mr. Rhodes (14), Mr. Fambro and Ms. Chialastri and Ms. Winborne (15), and Ms. Kosloski (25).
I look forward to seeing you around Ridgeview soon. I appreciate your ongoing support. Go Panthers!
