November 2021
Principal's Note
Happy November Lamar Families!
We are almost half way through our 2nd nine weeks and great things continue to happen in Cherokee Country!
Below are a few pictures of some of the activities from October as well as a Parent Portal button to access your child's midterm grades which will be available Thursday, November 11.
Make sure to also check out the school calendar button below for important upcoming dates and look at the info box below to access the SORA Digital Reading platform to allow your child to get their 20 minutes of daily reading.
Washington County Schools will be partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank to distribute free fall food boxes. Distribution will start Monday, November 8th at Daniel Boone and David Crockett. DCHS distribution will occur from 9:00-10:45 AM and DBHS will be from 12:00-1:45 PM.
You can request more help from the school using the "Request Student Resources" button below if your child or family needs assistance with hygiene items, clothing, food, school supplies, or other school resources.
Finally, a huge thank you to the Lamar PTA! Through the Fall Fundraiser and individual/ business donations, they have raised enough money to purchase the school 10 heavy duty metal picnic tables for use in the alcoves around the outside classrooms. These will be used by the students for lunch, small group learning stations, mask breaks, and many other activities for years to come. Check out their PTA section at the bottom of this newsletter to join this worthwhile organization and to see an example of the tables they will be getting for the school.
As always, please contact the school at 753-1130 is you have any questions or assistance.
Respectfully,
Mark Merriman, Principal

Digital Reading Access Through SORA
The Sora platform will offer access to a shared collection of titles within our district as well as public library eBooks and audiobooks. Users marked as Juvenile can view and borrow only juvenile titles from the public library, while those who are marked as Young Adult (Grades 7 and up) can view and borrow both young adult and juvenile titles. Parents should be aware that Young Adult materials are most often content appropriate to that age group, however, they can contain more mature content and themes than Juvenile materials. Any concerns about Young Adult access for students can be addressed with the student’s school librarian. Access for any student can be limited to Juvenile materials only, upon written request from the parent.
Benefits of Sora:
- Supports a variety of reading levels and learning styles
- Accessible everywhere 24/7, 365 days a year
- Works on Chromebooks, tablets, laptops, desktops and phones
- Easy to use application
- Greater selection of high interest books
- Supports independent learning
- Increases student engagement
- Increased access through Public Library consortium
We are excited to continue to offer this new reading tool for our students, knowing that 20 minutes a day of reading creates strong readers who have increased success in all other academic subjects as well as fuller, more enriched life experiences.
Please contact our library media specialist Ms. Nelson at nelsonk@wcde.org with any questions and use the button below to start reading!
