Coping with Change
- Have a Plan - Family calendars, student planners, making a list - all tools that help with organization. When students know ahead of time what they are facing in the coming day or week, they can feel more prepared to work through the days activities. For parents, having a plan can help ease stress related to mealtimes, getting kids to and from activities and helping kids with homework in the evenings.
- Get your Zzzz's - Sleep is critical for the body's restoration process. Having enough sleep will benefit the body and mind through increased energy, a strengthened immune system, heightened alertness, focus and creativity and improved mood by reducing anxiety, irritability and mental exhaustion. According to the National Sleep Foundation, recommended sleep times for Kids (ages 6-13) are 9-11 hours; and for Teens (ages 14-17) are 8-10 hours.
- Use your Breath - Taking a few mindful breaths can bring about self-awareness, attention control and emotion regulation, which can be very useful during stressful times. This will allow you to thoughtfully respond to a stress instead of quickly reacting to it. Try this simple breathing exercise:
-Inhale through your nose for a count of 4
-Hold the breath for a count of 7
-Exhale for a count of 8
-Repeat 4 Times
This is simple to do and can be done anywhere, anytime, without any equipment and will
help to calm your body and mind.

HAB Reports
Every two years, Northville Public Schools completes a Two-Year Health Report to communicate health curriculum information and the MiPHY Survey. The Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY) is an online student health survey, derived from student perception data, offered by the Michigan Departments of Education and Health and Human Services to support local and regional needs assessment. The MiPHY provides student results on health risk behaviors including substance use, violence, physical activity, nutrition, sexual behavior, and emotional health in grades 7, 9, and 11. The survey also measures risk and protective factors most predictive of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and violence. MiPHY results, along with other school-reported data, will help schools make data-driven decisions to improve prevention and health promotion programming.
