Jarrell Elementary Newsletter - January 15, 2024
Greetings JES Community!
On this day celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr., who dedicated his life to serving and uplifting others, in his honor, we also celebrate all of the self-sacrificing individuals who give of themselves everyday for the benefit of those around them. While the world pulls us to focus on the negative, we are reminded daily of the kind, generous, and courageous individuals in our community, and we are grateful.
This week we will take time to celebrate our JISD School Board Trustees. We are grateful for their care and commitment to our staff, students and this community as a whole. Jarrell ISD is truly a special place.
As always, we are here to help in whatever way your family may need. Please do not hesitate to reach out with your questions or suggestions.
With gratitude,
Lara Hutchinson

KINDER
1st GRADE
Reading: We will continue to review the parts of a letter: greeting, body, closing, and signature. Students will continue to write a friendly letter telling some of the things they learned from an informational text read aloud. We will continue to use text evidence from our informational text to identify important information we learned from the text and write comments about the information. We will also use a graphic organizer to record new information we are learning.
Phonics: We will introduce the word tense and understand that verb tenses identify the time of an event, using yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We will discuss how adding -ed can be pronounced differently: /ed/, /d/, and /t/. We will continue to read from our reader and answer written questions about key details. We will use what we know about base words to decode common compound words and words with -er, -ing, and -ed. Our spelling words are: zipper, barking, perfume, morning, carpet, forest, border, and today, and students will be tested over these words on Wednesday, January 17. We will have new spelling words coming home with students on Friday.
Math: We will continue our unit over place value and continue working with addition and subtraction to 20.
Science: We will continue to identify characteristics of the seasons of the year and day and night. We will record weather information by temperature such as hot or cold, clear or cloudy, calm or windy, and rainy or icy.
