Principal's Corner
Hello Thea Bowman Family,
‘Tis true, spring has sprung. It seems as if the 2016-2017 school year has flown by. It is certainly understandable that at this time of the year children and adults begin to suffer from spring fever. However, we want to strongly encourage our scholars to remain focused on the many academic learning opportunities which lie ahead as we approach the final two months of school.
Our dedicated staff continues to improve their teaching skills by participating in required professional development sessions. These sessions provide our teachers and instructional assistants with the training necessary to accommodate the educational needs of all students. Parents, you can feel confident that the staff at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy will ensure students are receiving the highest quality education possible until the very last opportunity to instruct scholars this school year and into the summer months.
Well, since summer learning was addressed above, please be sure to register your scholars immediately for our new summer school program entitled “Summer Advantage USA”. You will receive details in the very near future on how to enroll your child in our summer program that will provide students with skill building in Math and Reading, enrichment and talent development, as well as, Fun Friday activities with free breakfast and lunch.
Finally, Thea Bowman Family, please know we welcome your presence in our school. We only ask that you review our classroom visitation policy to keep teaching and learning disruptions to a minimum. In that connection, please mark your calendars for your participation in our second annual SIDE by SIDE DAY. This event will be held on May 5, 2017 from 8:00 – 1:00 p.m. On this day you are encouraged to visit our campus to sit SIDE by SIDE with your son/daughter in the classroom, have lunch SIDE by SIDE with your child as he/she eats in our cafeteria and/or walk from school SIDE by SIDE with your scholar.
We enthusiastically look forward to seeing you in our building.
Have an exceptional beginning of spring!!
Educationally yours,
Michael Collins

TBLA Black History Museum
A special group of scholars were selected, through an application and interview process, to work as museum tour guides. As scholars entered the museum they were greeted by a guide and given a tour of the museum.
We even had a guest historian by the name of Rev. Anita Marshall to set up a display and speak to our scholars. Her exhibit, entitled Straight Outta Chicago: Art and Politics, focused on artist Annie Lee from Chicago. Her artwork highlighted the African American community and culture. Rev. Marshall's intent was to show that "art and creativity is a natural part of our daily lives". She used books, prints, figurines, cartoons, and other artifacts to show the importance of art as a form of communication. She also included a questionnaire for teachers to share with their students as a discussion topic.
Thank you to our Black History Committee: Mrs. Muhammed, Mrs. Perry, Ms. Jones,
Ms. Summers, Ms. Glover, Nurse Hines, Mrs. Dittrich and Mrs. Hoyles
A very special thank you to our scholars: NyAsia Cooper (Supervisor), Olivia Davis (Asst. Supervisor), Hannah Henderson, Christina Campbell, Aniya Stout, Jaylynn Dodson, Jourdan Harris, Makhyla Crisler, Willie Leary, Kendall Younger, Ta'liya Smith, Diamond Jackons, Trevon McCutcheon, Paige Hughes, Celeste Moore, J'Mya Merrit, Landrea Jackson, Aalijah Watts
Please visit our Facebook page for pictures of our museum. They were posted in February. Want to take a tour of museum? Then watch our video.

Attendance Counts
Indiana Law states that if a parent does not ensure that his or her child goes to school, the parent can be charged with failure to educate which is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and up to a $1000 fine.
Tardiness is disruptive to the educational process and is inconsiderate to both teachers and other student; therefore, it is imperative that students are punctual. All TBLA students should be in their classroom sitting in their seat by 8 a.m. daily or they are tardy. Tardy students must obtain a pass to enter a classroom late.
It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the school before 9:00 a.m. if their child will be absent that day. Please send a follow-up note when the student returns to school. An absence without documented reason is considered truant after 11 days or 88 class periods.
Parents if you do not have your Power School log in information, it is located on the bottom of your scholar's report card and progress report. You have live access to grades, attendance, and direct contact with teachers.
If you have any questions please contact Ms. Webb at vwebb@tbla.email or call 219-883-4826 (elementary) 219-944-3100 (middle/high).
