EVA Newsletter
February 2023
From the Principal
We are approaching the end of the first semester and we must finish strong. Moving into second semester, remember EVA expectations to be present, engaged, and cameras on. Being logged into Zoom is not enough. Students also need to maintain their academics by finishing all classroom assignments. We will continue to work and encourage our students to achieve and be their best selves.
As a building, we are focusing on student attendance. If your child is not attending, you may receive a phone call or text from me or Mr. Schality asking where your child is. If you know your child will be absent, please email evaattendance@everettsd.org. We need this for our accountability to the state.
February is Black History Month. Every day this month, I will be reading about influential people who had a long and lasting impact on society during our morning announcements. Please encourage your child to share what they have learned and heard.
As we move into second semester, we will continue to hold students to EVA expectations and help them create and maintain good habits at school. I know and believe they can do it.
I look forward to the continued support from our families. Together we are stronger. Go Dragons!
Rich Middaugh, Principal

Attendance Policy and Procedure
What is the Law?
Washington law requires children from age 8 to 17 to attend a public school, private school or to receive home-based instruction (homeschooling). Children who are 6 or 7 years old are not required to be enrolled in school. However, if parents enroll their 6- or 7-year-old, the student must attend full time. Youth who are 16 or older may be excused from attending public school if they have graduated or acquired a GED. Washington’s truancy law, often termed the “Becca Bill” is intended to curb school truancy before it becomes habitual. The law requires many things of schools, but only requires one thing of students: attend school. If a student does not attend school the law requires the school district to take action.
In addition to the law, we have Policy 3122 and Procedure 3122P in place with regards to excused and unexcused absences. (link to policies)
From the Counselor
Happy February!
Each year Black History Month provides us the opportunity to celebrate the history, achievements, and contributions of African Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history. In 1976, the nation's bicentennial, President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history” and that year was the first Black History Month. By this time, the entire nation had come to recognize the importance of Black history in the drama of the American story.
This is a great month to watch a short, age appropriate video about Black history month with your children or talk about civil rights and respect for everyone.
