Introduction to Module 7
In last weeks module you learned about WWII and the Cold War. A lot of the information that we covered dealt with how Europe and American handled the political climate post WWII and tensions between the US and Soviet governments. This week we will turn our focus more to the American front, and examine the daily life of Americans in the post war years and how Civil Rights came to the forefront.
In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racially segregated schools were unconstitutional. In 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested after refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. Led by Martin Luther King Jr., a bus boycott brought about another Supreme Court ruling in favor of desegregation and the civil rights movement took hold across America.
In this lesson you will look at the Civil Rights Movement with particular attention to these terms and topics:
- 14th Amendment
- 15th Amendment
- Brown v. Board of Education
- Montgomery Bus Boycott
- Little Rock Nine
- March on Washington
- Civil Rights Act of 1964
- 24th Amendment
- Voting Rights Act of 1965
- Civil Rights Act of 1968
- Affirmative action
Assignment 1- You will create a timeline, very similar to the one your created of the major battles in WWII last week. Be sure to include a graphic and source citations for full credit. To help supplement some of this information I have linked an animoto and an article below.
Assignment 2- Some of the most significant photographs in American History were taken during the Civil Rights Movement. In this assignment you will look closely at some of the most famous photos to the era. You will need to analyze these pictures and answer the questions that accompany each one. For part 2, you will write a brief essay on the connection between these photos the Civil Rights Movement.
Assignment 3-In assignment 3 you will take a graded quiz. Be sure to review the notes and check out the quizlet of terms I have created and linked below.
