A Message from Principal Nixon--April 20, 2021
Dear Northwoods Families,
We did it!! We have met our fundraising goal of $15,000, which means that I will get covered in ice cream toppings after our DanceFit program concludes! More information will be sent out once we finalize the date/time for that event. As with other events in the past, we will post pictures to social media and will create a live stream link that VA students and families can use to watch as I get turned into a human ice cream sundae.
Again, I would like to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation for your help and support with this year's fundraiser!! Your continued support of our school means the world to me and the Northwoods staff!
Also, if you haven't had a chance to see it, Ms. Casey, our AIG teacher, put together a short video of me being taped to the flagpole last Friday. That video can be accessed using the link below. Beyond that, please take a few minutes to read through the information and updates below.
Respectfully,
Joe Nixon

School Information
Non-Returning Family Survey:
With the onset of spring, it's time to begin planning for the 2021-22 school year. As many of you know, student enrollment directly impacts the number of staff that are hired each year. It is essential that we know who is not planning to return so that we can move students off of our waitlist. Please take a few minutes to complete the short survey linked below for each Kindergarten - 4th grade child in your family who WILL NOT be attending Northwoods for the 21-22 school year.
End-of-Year Material Return:
All instructional materials (calculators, novels, math manipulative kits, etc.) that have been distributed to students throughout the year must be returned to school by May 27th. For your convenience, we have prepared a list of materials that should be returned for each grade level. Please see the list below.
Families who are planning to move outside of Wake County and/or NC must return all district-issued Chromebooks and hotspots prior to leaving. Otherwise, students may keep their devices over the summer.
Honor-a-Teacher Award Finalists:
I would like to thank everyone for submitting your nominations for the Town of Cary Honor-a-Teacher award program. 28 different teachers from Northwoods were nominated! Though I personally believe that all of our teachers are deserving of such an award, we had to narrow that pool down to 5 finalists. I am proud to announce that the following teachers were names as 2020-21 Honor-a-Teacher award finalists: Mrs. Teri Smith, Mrs. Roberta Seavey, Mrs. Karen Whelan, Mrs. Samantha Ahern, and Mrs. Teresa Combs. Please join me in congratulating each of these very deserving finalists!
Toys at School:
Parents, as a reminder, students may not bring toys of any kind (Stuffed animals, action figures, Pokémon Cards, etc.) to school, except for Show and Tell. Toys brought for Show and Tell must be kept in book bags for the rest of the school day. Trading cards should also remain at home. Please encourage your child to keep these items safely at home so that nothing can happen to them at school and so that he or she can focus on learning. Items brought to school in violation of this policy will be kept in the office until a parent comes to school to pick them up.
Future Asynchronous Days:
The remaining asynchronous learning days for the 2020-21 school year are listed below.
- Wednesday, April 28th
- Wednesday, May 5th
- Wednesday, May 26th
End-of-Grade Assessments for Virtual Academy Families:
Virtual Academy Families: If you haven't already done so, please complete the Spring 2021 Elementary Virtual Academy End-of-Grade Test (EOG) Participation Survey so that we know how many testing groups to plan for. Please complete the survey for each 3rd-5th grade child in your family that is currently participating in VA. The deadline to submit the survey is Friday, April 23rd. After the survey closes, we will announce the grade-specific testing dates for VA and face-to-face students.
