News from Carl Sandburg Junior High
January 16, 2024
A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
We've successfully made it through our first two e-learning days! I was so impressed with the high attendance online! Many of our classes had 100% attendance online for e-learning and that is fantastic!
I have included a few updates in this newsletter for families.
- 2nd quarter report cards are available on Infinite Campus.
- 3rd quarter has begun. If you have any questions about your child's progress, you're encouraged to reach out to your student's teachers.
- Sandburg yearbooks are for sale. The information is in the image below.
- All parents are welcome to join us for the PTSA meeting tonight at 6 pm. It's held virtually. Just email me for the Google Meeting link.
- Tomorrow night, at the Board of Education meeting, there will be a presentation about the updates to Middle School Programming, including Athletics. All parents are encouraged to watch the presentation online on the District's You Tube channel. The link is HERE.
- Kind request from the Health Office- Thank you to everyone who has brought in Kleenex- it's so appreciated. Each day we have several classrooms that are looking for an extra box of Kleenex and our supply is dwindling. Any donations can be dropped off in the front office. Thank you for your help!
Our school staff contact list is updated and available on the D15 website. Feel free to print it and keep it handy in the case you need to get in touch with any of our staff throughout the year.
Have a great week! Stay warm!
Erika Johansen

MILES of SMILES Dental Program
From the Health Office:
Your child will be bringing home forms for the Miles of Smiles Dental Program. There will be a yellow cover letter and a white permission slip.
This is for FREE dental services (Free Dental Exam, Prophylactic Treatment, Fluoride and Sealants) provided at Sandburg Jr. High by a licensed dentist and certified hygienist. There is NO COST to the families or the school. Medicaid and private dental insurance will be billed if applicable.
For eighth grade students, this exam will satisfy the mandatory dental requirement for students entering 9th grade (High School Freshman) in the fall of 2024.
The white permission slip needs to be completed and returned to the school by
January 29, 2024. You may also complete the form online by scanning the QR code on the yellow form.

Information from D15 Instructional Technology
Over the last few months, the Technology department has been fielding requests to “block gaming sites”. It was determined that students were using their CCSD15 Google account to create websites that had games embedded into them.
In an attempt to be proactive and respond to this issue, the District has temporarily disabled the ability to create new Google Sites, and took time to review student created sites. Sites that were created to disguise/embed other games have been deleted, and school leaders have been given a list of student names who created these sites. Over the month of January, building leaders are going to meet and discuss this issue with students who created these sites. Additionally, the Technology department will work with school leadership to monitor these students going forward. After February 1st, Google Site creation will be turned back on, with monitoring.
We always strive for students to make the right choices in using their D15 Google Workspace for Education tools, and hope to utilize this situation as an opportunity to discuss good digital citizenship with our students. As parents/guardians of students, please talk to your students about responsible use of their CCSD 15 technology tools. Parent/guardians can also use at-home monitoring tools, such as GoGuardian Parent, which is available to families.
