April 2023
Principal's Message
Wow, this school year sure is flying by! It’s hard to believe that there are only two months left in this school year. Family involvement is important to the success of your child’s education. To bring our families together, we would like to invite you to a few upcoming events.
First, we would like to invite our families to our Family Science Night on April 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This night is free of charge and will be filled with hands on science activities, robotics, coding and a visit to our STEM lab. Please understand that all students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Next, we have our Dad's Club sponsored beach clean-up day at Seal Beach on Sunday, April 23. All Crescent families are invited to spend the morning cleaning the beach and the afternoon enjoying beach time with other Crescent families. More information will be shared by Dad's Club.
Lastly, we have Open House coming up on May 23 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 pm. This year we will start with staff introductions and PTA information meeting from 6 to 6:25 p.m. followed by classroom visits from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. We will not be assigning times based on last name, all families are welcome to visit their child's class anytime between 6:30 p.m. to 7:30. We ask that you also take a few minutes to visit the STEM lab, library and RSP (if your child receives RTI or IEP support).
In addition to school sponsored events, we have a few fun PTA sponsored events coming up! PTA will be hosting Family Movie Night on the blacktop, date and time TBD. The event will include games, food trucks, and a family friendly movie. On April 25, we will be taking over a section of Angels' Stadium to enjoy a ball game. Don’t forget to buy your tickets ahead of time to get seats in our school section. To end the school year PTA will be hosting Career Day for grades 3-6 on May 31 during the school day. Please contact Crescent PTA if you are interested in presenting about your career.
We will be celebrating our 6th grade promotion on Thursday, June 8 (last day of school) at 8:45 am. This year all 6th grade students will be included in one promotion ceremony. We will not have a cap on the number of guests per student, however, seating is limited.
Thank you for your support, grace, encouragement, and love. We look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events and celebrations.
State Testing Schedule
To help our families manage scheduling appointments and/or absences during State testing we would like to share the tentative testing schedule. Please note this schedule may change at any time. If your child is in 3rd-6th grade, please avoid scheduling appointments during the school day for the month of May. Also, to reduce distractions during testing, we ask that all students arrive to school on time.

Counselor's Corner
Hello Crescent Families,
April has arrived and this month is the month of the Military Child and Earth Day. To recognize military families we will be planning to wear purple one day this month (TBD), to show our appreciation to all branches of the military. It is also Earth Day on April 22. On Friday, April 21, we will wear something green as a reminder to help keep our school campus and Earth clean.
Our social-emotional theme for this month is responsible decision making. In my first introductory lesson, I explained the role of a school counselor and taught them one way to practice responsible decision making was by using a coping tool when they feel angry, sad, nervous, and or high energy to help them feel better.
The tool was a breathing exercise called triangle breathing. If they saw the lesson, they might be able to teach it to you too! I also shared that they might have a different breathing exercise that helps them feel better and that’s ok too. The goal is to find coping tools that work best for them.
For practice, ask your student which coping strategies they prefer when they are feeling big feelings (for example anger, sadness, high energy). This includes taking a walk, asking for help, getting a drink of water, walking away to cool down, talking to a friend or trusted adult, and or deep breathing (triangle breathing). Triangle breathing is a coping tool where they can draw an imaginary triangle on their hand while taking long slow breaths. Once they finish drawing the triangle they can say, "I'm ok," or "I've got this."
Finally, my plan is to play some games out during recess so if you have any new or gently used games and or crafts to donate, we would greatly appreciate them. Some examples include Jenga, Connect 4, Uno, origami paper, rainbow loom crafting kits and/or markers.
Happy Spring!

National Writing Invitational
My name is Gabrielle Park from Crescent Elementary, grade 6, and I am a volunteer for the National Writing Invitational (NWI). NWI is a new writing competition sponsored by the students of Buena Park High School (Skills and Competition Club) and other area schools.
NWI invites ALL students (K-12) to submit their stories, poems, or essays, by July 1, 2023. The first 200 submissions will be published in our contest website and a Kindle book, and receive feedback from volunteer judges.
This is a FREE (no fee) competition for any student, with a passion for writing and a voice to share. Please share widely with interested students and teachers.
Eligibility Standards
■ The contest is open to anyone (grades K-12) in the United States. The participant’s grade is the one just completed (before July 1).
■ Four grade categories: K-3; 4-6; 7-9; 10-12
■ A participant may compete in one or more of four submission categories
■ Stories
■ Poems
■ Science/Social Science: Please choose an issue or question in science, technology, engineering, math, or the social sciences, then write an engaging explanation in 700 words or less.
■ Discovery: Something you figured out or think you figured out. Idea, fact, experience or philosophy. Whether it is personal, worldly, big, small, false or true, we want it all.
■ No hard limit on the minimum or maximum word count, but we prefer under 700 words (and no more than 1000 words).
For more information and submission, please visit https://sites.google.com/view/natwriteinvite; or email nationwriteinvite@gmail.com (Brian Lee, Buena Park HS, Competition and Skills Club) for any questions!
Librarian's Message
Library Closing Date
The library has some exciting news!
New shelving for the middle section of the library will be installed in the first week of June. Our wonderful PTA raised enough funds to replace, in the existing footprint, shelving for the non-fiction books. Eventually, the rest of the library shelving will be replaced as well.
It is an expensive and time consuming endeavor but it will be worth it in the end. Because the library is preparing for construction, we will close library access on May 1, 2023. All books must be returned to the library during that week. Students have been notified that they will be responsible for securing books either through their classroom library or public library.
Fourth Grade Student Access to National Parks
If your child is in the Fourth Grade, they, along with their families, have free access to all of the National Parks through the Every Kid Outdoors Program. Click on the link to print out a ticket voucher. It is good for over 2,000 National Parks in the United States…..and it is FREE!
Free Tutoring and Ebook Access
Did you know the California Department of Education offers free tutoring through the California State Library? The resources offer 24/7 online tutoring, and simultaneous use of eBooks – including bilingual beginning readers, graphic novels, award winners and non-fiction titles from publishers such as Capstone at EnkiYA.
Thank You!
Thank you to all of the parents that have donated their gently used books to the library. I am often asked if we take used books and the answer is YES! We especially love hardback books because they last longer. Paperback books on average last approximately one year - with lots of tape and repair to extend their readable lives. If I cannot use them, we will find a home for them through groups we partner with.
Did You Know?
Did you know we have an Amazon Wishlist? It is in the link and we appreciate anything that comes our way. Students are always so excited when new books are placed on the shelves. The list constantly changes and we update it often. Thank you for considering our library when donating.

Mr. Ireland's STEM Corner
Our 3rd graders have started the Project Lead The Way module, Variation of Traits. In this module, students investigate the differences between genetic traits that are inherited and traits that are influenced by the environment. Students learn about dominant and recessive alleles, as they explore the phenomenon that offspring may express different traits than parents. Students apply this knowledge as they use a Punnett square to document possible genotypes and phenotypes of offspring.
In the problem, students select four inherited traits for fictitious parent animals. Students follow the design process to explore, sketch, build, and evaluate an offspring of the parent animals that’s able to survive in a specific environment. Students use data to support their explanation of the inherited traits passed from the parents to the offspring.
