Literacy in CCSD
Literacy in Cherry Creek Schools
In the Cherry Creek School District, we understand the power of literacy. Students who can read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to graduate than their peers. Literacy doesn’t only determine success in school - the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively impacts every aspect of our lives. Literacy is empowering and liberating.
It is crucial and urgent that every CCSD student is able to read at grade level. That’s why we have made literacy a priority in our Strategic Plan. We are committed to ensuring that every single student in our district can read on grade level by 2030.
To accomplish this goal, we have developed the Cherry Creek Literacy Plan. This plan uses the Science of Reading in every classroom. Please see the video above, or visit the Cherry Creek Literacy Plan to learn more about the strategies we are using in CCSD.

How can I provide support for my child at home?
For young students, practicing reading skills at home by sounding out words and discussing the meaning of sentences is a great start! Help older students by making sure they have time to read, write, and discuss what they’re reading every day.
Celebrating Cherry Creek Reads Week
We celebrated Cherry Creek Reads week in March. The theme for this districtwide celebration of reading was “Read Together, Inspire Together” which is based on the book "Words of Wonder from Z to A," written by Zaila Avant-garde and illustrated by Keisha Morris. Listen to the book with your child, or learn more about the author below!
Pegasus Project
Independence Elementary School had many furry friends visit to kick off Cherry Creek Reads! Each student received a stuffed animal to read to, thanks to the Pegasus Project whose goal is to provide children with a stuffed animal reading buddy to foster the joy of reading. With the help of the community, the Pegasus Project collected more than 6,000 stuffed animals to give students at 8 elementary schools in the Smoky Hill HS feeder area. Read more about the Pegasus Project here.
Sunrise Elementary March Madness Literacy Night
To close out Cherry Creek Reads week, Sunrise Elementary held a March Madness Literacy Night. The evening was complete with reading games, basketball in the gym, free pizza, and book tournament brackets for each grade! Throughout the school, students participated in group read-alouds, comic book creations, writing stories, visiting the Aurora Public Library mobile truck, and more! Thank you, Sunrise, for making reading fun and accessible.
