VISION STATEMENT
TO EMPOWER ONE ANOTHER TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN THE WORLD
A Message From Dr. Flowers- Principal
Dear Families:
I hope this message finds you well. It has been a challenging week for all of us here at Brimfield Elementary as we mourn the loss of one of our beloved teachers, Mr. Irland. He has left a mark on our school community and the hearts of many students in the district.
Throughout this difficult time, our priority has been to support our students. We had counselors available this week to provide assistance and guidance to any students who needed it. If your child continues to need support or wishes to continue meeting with a counselor, please do not hesitate to reach out to their teacher. We are here to help in any way we can.
In addition to providing emotional support, we want to remind you that next week marks the beginning of state testing. Please take note of the following testing dates:
Grade 3 ELA: April 16 & 17
Grade 4 ELA: April 16 & 17
Grade 5 ELA: April 15 & 18
During testing, third and fourth-grade students will have a combination of morning and afternoon testing sessions. If your child will be absent from school or needs to leave early on any of these days, we kindly ask that you inform your child's teachers in advance.
Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and continued support during these challenging times.
Warm regards,
Barb Flowers
Counselors Corner
Dear Parents and Guardians,
In the vibrant world of school life, our community experiences countless numbers of emotions, from joy and excitement to, occasionally, loss and grief. Recognizing the importance of addressing these more challenging times, we dedicate this special edition of our newsletter to the topic of grief, particularly as it pertains to our young learners.
Understanding Grief in Children
Grief is a complex, multifaceted response to loss, and children experience it as deeply as adults, though often in different ways. Their understanding and reactions can vary widely, depending on their age, emotional maturity, and relationship to what or whom they have lost.
It's essential to acknowledge that grief in children may not always manifest as tears or sadness. It can appear as anger, frustration, a decline in academic performance, or withdrawal from social interactions. Recognizing these signs is the first step in providing support.
How to Support Grieving Children
Open Communication: Encourage open, honest discussions about their feelings. Let them know it's okay to talk about their emotions and share their thoughts.
Maintain Routine: As much as possible, keep their daily routines unchanged. Stability offers comfort and security during times of turmoil.
Be Patient: Understand that grief doesn't have a timetable. Children may take longer to process their emotions, or they may revisit their feelings of loss over time, especially as they grow and their understanding deepens.
Professional Support: Sometimes, a child may benefit from speaking with a counselor or therapist who specializes in child bereavement. Don't hesitate to reach out for professional help if you feel it's needed.
Education on Grief: Educate yourselves and your children about grief. Understanding that it's a normal part of life can help demystify and destigmatize the feelings they're experiencing.
Resources for Families
Books on Grief for Children: "The Invisible String" by Patrice Karst, "The Goodbye Book" by Todd Parr, and "When Dinosaurs Die" by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown.
Online Resources: The Dougy Center (dougy.org) offers comprehensive support materials for families grieving a death.

PBIS CORNER
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is an important part of the school environment to encourage positive behavior. There are clear expectations throughout the school that are taught consistently throughout the year. The four expectations promoted at Field Local Schools are:
Safe
Outstanding
Accountable
Respectful
When students do not respond to teaching of the building or classroom expectations, we will view it as an opportunity for re-teaching, not just negative consequences. Students still receive consequences for negative behavior. The goal of the consequence is to teach students so they will not repeat the negative behavior.
