Words from the Woods
April 2018
Back in the building
As we move towards the end of the year, there will, as ever, be lots of activity and things to tend to. Below are the items currently on my radar.
Important Points for Student Walkout/Sit-In on April 20th
Please note: Below is the memo Mr. Bryan issued to high school students regarding the student-organized civil action planned for Friday, April 20.
1. Students may only leave campus during the school day with direct, explicit permission from their parents to the front office.
If you leave school without permission, you are skipping class(es), and you will most likely receive an in-school suspension as a consequence. (If you’ve been punished for skipping school before, you will face additional consequences.)
Students who leave school may not participate in that afternoon’s/ evenings’ extracurricular school events (practices, games, etc.).
2. If you leave class to “sit in,” you will eventually be asked to return to class. If you refuse to return to class when directed, you will face suspension for skipping class and for insubordination.
3. According to actuarial data (the data collected and analyzed by insurance companies), students should avoid this scenario: a car full of students, driven by a student, in a student-led caravan.
Orientation for rising high schoolers
No school on April 27!
Since there is some time to be made up due to snow, the School Board will decide how to squeeze that into the schedule. Stay tuned for information about their decision.
It's AP season
For students taking exams, the schedule can be crazy. Please check in with your child to make sure they have breakfast and lunch on testing days, and get to school on time.
Students taking AP exams will receive a half-day of study leave prior to exam time. Forms will be sent home with the details in May.
Timeliness and missing school
In the event that your student is absent from class for any reason, they will be expected to contact their teacher and arrange to catch up on any missed work. It's important that students follow up immediately after an absence, and complete assignments within three days (as per the School Handbook).
College planning for rising seniors and families
Juniors and families are invited to attend a workshop on May 17, 6:45-8:00 to discuss next steps, what to do over the summer, and important questions to consider before senior year.
