Welcome Back!! Happy New Year! I Hope Everyone Had a Great Break!
Maternity Leave/Long Term Sub
I am happy to announce that Kirstin Marquet will be the long term sub while I am out on maternity leave. She has been a sub in our classroom earlier in the year and she has been in multiple times to meet the students and see how our classroom runs. She is part of the DPS community with a daughter in TK and a son in 2nd grade! She has multiple teaching credentials and has been a teacher for 6 years. She will be emailing you all directly once she starts so you have her contact info for communication while I am out.
Change with Homework Starting Semester 2 (1/27)
Originally students were completing one page per day in class as a warm-up, but in order to maximize our ELA time in class I have taken it out of our morning routine. Again, this is another resource available to you and would be great practice for homework.
Thank you!
LEAP Program Coming to DPS
Did you see that DPS is partnering with San Marcos Promise's LEAP program so teachers can offer after school enrichment classes this Spring?
There are 8 classes being taught by your very own Double Peak teachers on Thursdays Feb 6- March 19th.
A HUGE benefit is that a percentage of the class enrollment don't go to a 3rd party, they go straight back to our site funds and The San Marcos Promise, benefitting so many more students and programs! Not to mention...they are FUN classes! Our art teacher Mrs. Bullard will be running an awesome Glow in the Dark art camp.
Registration is now open

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM??
- Homework: Students will not have a BINGO sheet go home this week. They will receive their new and final BINGO sheet on Friday January 17th. Make sure to be reading and practicing math facts every night.
- Innovation: Innovation Block 2 continued! We are moving to the innovation lab where students will focus on coding and robotics through different exploration centers. The centers students will be interacting with include scratch jr, bitsbox, tynker, dash, sphero and ozobots.
- ELA/Language Arts - Unit 5: Advancements in Technology. Our essential question is: What is the Value of Innovation? This week we will read two texts focusing on the invention and evolution of the telephone. The reading strategies we will focus on include identifying key details and determining the main idea, using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words, analyzing text connections to determine the structure of a text and using graphic features to aid in comprehension.
- Math - This week we will be focusing on problem solving and a review of standards we have covered this year. Students will participate in activities and games where they will practice adding, subtracting, area, and solving problems. Students will continue to practice their math facts in class. Next week we will begin our new unit on fractions!
- Writing - Students will begin researching for their innovator project. Additionally, students will be reviewing the features of a narrative and write a narrative incorporating evidence from their in class readings.
- Spelling- The spelling pattern for this week includes words with the Vce syllable pattern. Words with this pattern have a long vowel sound and the e is silent, also known as Bossy e. The words we will focus on and that are found in our readings for the week are: telephone, arrive, whole, June, huge, broke, celebrated, wire.
- Vocabulary- Students will be able to use reference materials and context clues in a text to build their vocabulary. They will show their understanding of the words by using them in a sentence during collaborative conversations and in their writing. Our vocab words for the unit include: amplified, commonplace, device, distant, established, innovative, obtain, revolutionary, soared and technology.
- 7 Habits - Habit of the Month: Habit 3-Put First Things First.
