COUGAR COURIER
February 8th, 2019
From the desk of Principal Ruiz
In 3rd grade, our scholars investigated student created inquiry questions related to animal traits and inheritances using worms as their test subjects. Science truly came to life in Mrs. Wagoner's class this week!
Beginning next week, our cafe will offer fruit snacks for fifty cents; the snacks may be purchased during lunch. Scholars are limited to purchasing 2 packages each day so the fruit snacks are not a distraction to eating a balanced meal during lunch.
The CIA Battle Club scholars had a wonderful time at Barnes & Noble. Scholars learned how the store operates, conducts inventory and experienced a behind the scenes look at the work/storage room! Mr. Jim Emmons, the branch manager, gave a great tour of the store. This trip did not end there..our scholars also engaged in a book scavenger hunt that extended the learning experience to checking out books in various sections of the store. Our very own scholars were extended the privilege to suggest book titles for next year's required reading list. A special thanks to Mrs. Trost and Mrs. Tucker who met our scholars at the store; our team was blessed to have them as chaperones for the day. Ms. Simpson was pleased, but surprised, by the display of gratitude and respect our scholars used to represent CIA!
This week our 8th grade scholars met with the high school coaches to learn about the opportunities to be a scholar and an athlete in their high school career. For more information, please visit the High School Athletic webpage.
Ms. Johns' scholars visited the Civil Rights Museum for an interactive learning experience that reinforced COURAGE. through personal stories from African American patrons of the Natatorium and discussed demographics and history of segregation in the city; including that of the Studebaker Plant.
Our 1st grade scholars watched an all-time favorite book, Go Dog Go, come to life on stage this week! Be sure to ask your scholars about this wonderful display of visual arts.
The CIA 7th and 8th grade scholars displayed their love for Science in the annual CIA Science Fair on Friday. Thank you to each family that encouraged their scholar to show their love for learning. Our CIA staff seeks to EMPOWER each scholar to discover what they are capable of doing for themselves.
Today is the last day to order Spirit Wear! Click the link below to order CIA items that may be worn to school, in lieu of a polo shirt. CIA spirit wear may be worn any day at CIA. The online store closes, today, Friday, February 8th - get your spirit wear before the online store closes!
This week our 8th grade scholars registered for their high school classes. Parents, we encourage each of you to communicate with the receiving high school if changes are necessary as CIA cannot make changes for the high school schedule.
The 7th grade Band and Orchestra Field Trip that was previously scheduled for February 5th, has been rescheduled for February 11th. Please note the change on the calendar of events.
Foreign language classes, Latin and Spanish, continue at CIA. Be sure to ask your scholar to share what they are learning.
Parents, you will want to inquire with your scholar about their opportunity to explore band as an elective class for the 2019 - 2020 school year. CIA scholars will each select a visual or performing arts class for their next year's schedule. Once the selection has been finalized, changes will not be made. Please ensure your scholar chooses the best-fit class for next year. If there are question or concerns about scheduling, please contact Mrs. Callahan, our Guidance Counselor.
A special video link has been added to this week's edition of the Cougar Courier titled, Love is...be sure to see how CIA views love!
Be sure to check out the Great Day at CIA video performed by our very own Cougar Cast! You will not want to miss this way to "view" CIA. Click the link below...
Have a wonderful weekend - as always, it is a great day to be a Cougar!

100 Days of Learning!
We have been counting the days...not until the school comes to an end, but rather to celebrate 100 days of learning! The 100th day of academic growth took place on Thursday of this week.
Kindergarten scholars dressed up like what they predict they will look like when they are 100, counted 100 objects, as well as incorporated 100 days of learning in their small group centers.
1st grade is celebrating the 120th day of school as a milestone as this is an Indiana State Standard. Be sure to check back to see how they celebrate learning for 120 days!
2nd grade scholars worked on various ways to make the number 100 using addition and subtraction strategies, coins, tens frames, and base-ten blocks!
4th grade scholars identified 100 things they love about CIA!
Our 6th grade scholars celebrated the monumental moment with 100 minutes of activities including, but not limited to: magazine percentages, descriptive writing "When I am 100, I will...", minute to win it, 100 history facts, parts of speech Scattergories, things my teacher has said 100 times, and so much more!
Our skilled staff embodies a thirst for knowledge and learning each day. As educational leaders, we learn and grow with and for our scholars. This week, we are thankful for 100 days of learning as a CIA family!
And now you know...
All Things Student Council (STCO) - Aspiring to Inspire
STCO is still working hard as a “Hero Squad” member by helping out the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society raise funds for their organization. So far, even with the bad weather, CIA students and staff have donated a total of $86.14. Wow! Way to go Cougars!
As you know, each classroom is in a race to raise the most money for this very worthy cause, with the winning classroom receiving a Dunkin’ Donut Hole party! Right now, Mrs. Schena’s Kindergartner’s are in the lead with a class total of $26.00! And, while they are cute, the race is still on, so, let’s all fly high as part of the Hero Squad and bring in that change! Together WE CAN change the face of cancer!

Who wants to design a T-Shirt?
Gather your Box Tops to raise money for CIA
Well, with all of us stuck at home for a few days, many CIA families may have purchased numerous items at the grocery store that have those Box Top labels. So, please, take a minute to remove those labels and send them in with your students. This will help CIA because we'll be counting BoxTops at our February 14th STCO meeting so that we can send them in by the March 1st deadline. It is a helpful and easy way for us to earn money for CIA! Thank you for showing your Cougar Pride!
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
Clay International Academy (CIA) will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 28, 2019. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what scholars know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Your child may have been randomly selected to take an assessment in mathematics or reading. For more information, click here...
