Weekly Update
Week of March 23-27, 2020
A Word From Your Principal
One of our sweet 3rd graders sent me an email yesterday that read, "Dear Miss Haas. I hope you are enjoying your 6-week vacation!" Needless to say, her well intentioned sentiment evoked a range of emotions from a quick chuckle to a stab of sadness around our current situation. That being said, it felt wonderful to be connected to one of our students in even a small way. This coming week, we will be all hands on deck focused on outreach to families and students to reassure them that we are indeed here for them during school closure. While supporting students and families is paramount, tending to adult SEL will also be critical as we balance a range of emotions around our shifting and changing roles as educators. I received a link to an excellent article out of RULER related to this very topic:
Teacher, Interrupted: Leaning into Social-Emotional Learning Amid the COVID-19 Crisis
I know I say it all the time, but I am grateful to lead our McMicken community (even remotely,) and hold a strong belief that we will come together in this crisis and welcome you all to reach out with questions, comments, concerns--or send a humorous meme, or just say hi. Thank you for all you do! :)Alex
SEL Corner with Jodi
In the article, Teacher, Interrupted: Leaning into Social-Emotional Learning Amid the COVID-19 Crisis, the RULER team questions how students and educators are coping with life being turned upside down so quickly. While at times it feels like another long weekend or an early spring break, it’s not, we are currently experiencing a crisis. As we ask students and educators to work differently, my questions to each of you are; How are you coping? What strategies are you using during these unprecedented times? How will you staying emotionally regulated? I’ve noticed this last week, I’m relying even more on my SEL strategies especially positive self-talk. The article shares a few suggestions for staying emotionally regulated during this crisis.
- Check in on how you are feeling a few times a day. Accept all emotions, this is information to be attended to.
- Be kind to yourself and flexible with your schedule; take your dog for an extra walk, stop to play a game with a family member, clean your closet (this brings me the most joy!!).
- Carefully monitor your media consumption, find the “tech” routines that work for your family.
- When you are faced with an overwhelming situation, take a meta-moment and visualize your best self.
Don’t be afraid to lean into SEL in the coming weeks, ruler.online has some great resources to explore for both a home and when we are back in our classrooms. We got this!! - Jodi
