Second Grade News
October 30 - November 3
Happy Halloween!
- The students had fun trick or treating at Hendricks Nursing Home and Hospital. Thank you to the staff and residents for having the second grade class!
- Miss Deuel came to read to the class a spooky story. Second graders set the mood by turning the lights off and having the Smartboard project a picture of a bat cave as she read.
- This week we read all about bats, focusing on the main idea and details of a text. We learned that the largest bat is the Flying Fox of Australia. It has a wing span of 6 feet!
STEM
STEM stands for science, technology. engineering, and mathematics. This week we planned, designed, tested, and revised candy catapults. The students had fun trying to design a catapult that would launch the candy the farthest. Congratulations to Adelyn and Camden for coming up with a design that would launch their candy the farthest! It made it 6 feet and 15 inches from where we started!

Grammar can be FUN!
We practiced matching nouns to the correct plural spelling by playing a Twister game.
Betsy Ross
Second graders used Miss Hettver's time machine to travel back in time to 1776. They took a tour of the Betsy Ross home and compared and contrasted the original American flag to our current American flag.
IXL Math
IXL is a math program that is on the iPads. Students are working at their own pace to complete math skills. The students have set their own math goals and are working towards meeting those goals, using a chart to graph their own progress. Students may use the IXL website to practice math skills at home.
