What are buildings made of?
This week's investigation was focused on the question: What are buildings made of?
We explored materials and their characteristics; we practiced our designing techniques; we learned new vocabulary words like structure and sturdy.
This week we are investigating what buildings are made of and what makes them strong. During our morning circle time we examined building materials such as bricks, tile, wood and metal. We considered what they could be used for and tested how strong they were in different ways, such as bending, stretching or standing on them! The children were able to investigate these materials further in our Discovery center.
We passed around pictures of different buildings and the children described what type of building they saw and what materials were used to make it. We talked about how sometimes buildings have problems and it's the job of a building inspector to make sure a building stays strong and safe.
What new words are we using this week? Foundation, building inspector, sturdy, characteristics.
