Vocabulary Cards
Vocabulary PEAK Strategy
What is it?
Vocabulary Cards are based on the Frayer Model to help facilitate the learning of new words. Each card has 4 areas for students to describe/explain the word using pictures, descriptions meaningful phrases, and characteristics. This format can be modified to fit the needs of your students and or the words being introduced.
Where can I find more info?
All of the specific steps and ways to use this strategy are found on page 406-407 in the BIG PEAK book.
How do I use this strategy?
- Students use an index card or vocabulary card template while the teacher displays the vocabulary card on the projector or draws an example on the white board.
- Write the prompt "description, explanation, or example" in one box and have students do the same on their cards.
- Describe the term in your own words and then write your description. Then have students write their description. They may use yours or come up with one of their own.
- Walk students through each box, writing the prompt and modeling the completion of the box.
