Compromise of 1850
- A package of five bills passed in September of 1850
- Texas surrendered New Mexico and all of it's land North of the 3630 line
- California became a free state but did not get split into two states
- Senator Stephen A. Douglas separated Henry Clay's bill into several and passed each of them separately

- Declared that all runaway slaves were to be returned to their masters after they were captured
- A compromise between the slave South States and the free North States
