Food Literacy for Teachers
How can we integrate food literacy into academic classrooms? Join Lisa Burgess in the Learning Kitchen to explore this question while we also consider food justice; how to optimize our health, brain, and quality of life; and how multicultural food helps bridge societal gaps, increases our understanding of others, opens up conversations, and builds empathy.

Tools of Engagement: Revitalizing Reluctant Writers & Readers
Join facilitators Linda Brock and Jen Jones as they lead learning around topics including:
- student engagement with and through reading and writing, including digital and media literacy.
- current research and practices for supporting readers and writers who have difficulties.
- ways identity, visibility, and culture influence student participation.
The course will run January - May, with two monthly Zoom sessions on Monday night.
ENGL5990 can be an elective in the Grad Certificate, and costs about $1,100
(free scholarships for CLSD teachers)

Scholastic Writing Awards
The annual writing contest for students grades 7-12 is open!
Students can submit entries in more than 10 different categories, including short story, poetry and critical essay. Go to www.artandwriting.org to get started.
Teachers interested in serving as a judge, can sign up here for the virtual scoring event, Saturday, January 14.
An Open House for award winners and their families will take place Saturday, March 9, in Columbia, Missouri.

UCM's Veteran Voices from the Heartland
History teachers or those interested in hands-on, primary research involving soldiers interred in Fort Scott National Cemetery can participate in a one-day Spring workshop working alongside researchers and educators from the Midwest Genealogy Center and UCM.

Middle School Writers Conference
Writers in grades 6-8 will participate in interactive writing workshops. Students from diverse schools can build new friendships, explore new writing opportunities, and read their works at the Open Mic performance. Teachers will take away new classroom lesson and activity ideas. Lunch is provided.
A team of 1 teacher and 5 students is $200. Register here.
Upcoming Events
KC Storytellers: weaving social justice, community and storytelling together for area high school students. Our goal is to assemble students from every district in the city, and you can nominate students who want to break down divisive barriers, like race, here. Sometimes a simple nomination is the encouragement a student needs to step up.
KC Storytellers Community Celebration: Engage with the stories of students throughout our city. Plaza Library, March 2, 3pm
