February Library Update
In February we welcomed our first guest reader, and frequent volunteer, Mitzi Benitez who graciously shared the Catholic traditions of Mardi Gras and King Cake. We all really enjoyed hearing her share the stories of her own experiences growing up, and raising her children in New Orleans and their family tradition of riding on Mardi Gras parade floats.
We recognized Valentine's Day by having students decorate hearts with the names of their favorite book characters. It was wonderful to hear all our readers discussing which characters they liked and why. Students in grades K-4 listened to "Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink" by Diane de Groat and talked about the importance of being nice to others. Students in grades 3-5 learned about the life of St. Valentine through the book "Saint Valentine" retold and illustrated by Robert Sabuda and discussed how we celebrate the holiday today.
We focused on the non-fiction genre of biography this month which fit nicely into the themes of both African American History Month and President's Day. Students learned about quite a few famous Americans depending on their grade level. Biographies included: "Looking at Lincoln" by Maira Kalman; "I am Abraham Lincoln" by Brad Meltzer; "Queen of the Falls" by Chris Van Allsburg about Annie Edson Taylor who went over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel; "I Am Amelia Earhart" by Brad Meltzer about the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean; "Barnum's Bones" by Tracey Fern about Barnum Brown who discovered the Tyrannosaurus Rex; and "Wilma Unlimited" by Kathleen Krull about Wilma Rudolph's remarkable triumph over polio to become the first woman to win three gold medals in track at a single Olympics.
Other library activities included mending broken hearts to find call numbers for biographies, completing mini-books about presidents Lincoln and Washington, and timelines of all of our American Presidents to date. It has been a busy month in the library!
In March we will continue to delve into the genre of biography, recognize Dr. Seuss's birthday, learn about St. Patrick, and share some Easter stories.
Volunteers Needed: Looking ahead to April we will be holding our Spring Book Fair April 4 - 8. We will need volunteers to help set up beginning on March 31 and running through April 4. If you think you may have time to help with set up, pack up, or sales during or after school please be sure to email Mrs. Marshall. We need you!
