HAPPY NEW YEAR!
CHARACTER CORNER
A moral person is honest and good.
“If moral behavior were simply following the rules, we could program a computer to be moral.”
-Samuel P. Ginder
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Bumpus Family,
We have had a great week transitioning into the new year. Consider joining us tonight, January 7th, at the Chick-fil-A at the Grove for our first spirit night of the new year!! Bumpus will receive a portion of sales between 4pm-7pm that night!
Next week, our students will take the Winter Scantron Assessment - At Home Edition.
SCANTRON Formative Assessment - At Home Edition
All testing will occur “at home”. Most students will not test in the face-to-face setting.
Monday/Tuesday January 11th/January 12th Test Prep/Scantron Training Video
Wednesday, January 13th All Students Reading 9:00 - 12:00
Thursday, January 14th Virtual and M-Z Students Math 9:00 - 12:00
Friday, January 15th Virtual make-up and A-L Students Math 9:00 - 12:00
These are target testing dates and times. We know there might be a few exceptions. However, in order to best support your child(ren), the 9:00 - 12:00 timeframe is preferable.
Monday, January 18th is MLK Day of Service. Please consider volunteering with your child(ren). It benefits your child(ren) as well as the community.
On Thursday, January 21st, we will release the Fall Awards Day video to students and parents. This video will be of the teachers recognizing the names of the students on their academic team who are standouts going above and beyond. Stay tuned.

WINTER SCANTRON PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT - HOME VERSION
Parents/Guardians,
Just as they did with the Fall administration of the test, Bumpus Middle School students will be taking the Winter Scantron Performance test from home.
Our three target testing dates are
Wednesday (1/13/21) Reading All Students
Thursday (1/14/21) Math M-Z Students
Friday A-L (1/15/21) Math A-L Students
Students who attend virtually can begin the Math Scantron test 1/14 or 1/15.
As you and your child(ren) prepare for this assessment please keep the following in mind:
Home internet can be, at times, unreliable. Please prepare to persevere and be patient throughout the testing process.
To prevent any technical issues, please ensure that the Chromebook is up to date.
This test will create an error if students are trying to answer questions too quickly without taking appropriate time to read the question and any associated passages or tables.
It is okay if the student doesn't know the answer to a question. The test will keep increasing in difficulty so that it can clearly identify where the student currently stands in terms of the typical progression of content. They aren’t supposed to know everything at this stage.
The benchmarking assessment data from this fall will be compared to last year to determine your child’s academic readiness for this school year. It is important for students to do their best.

ATTENDANCE - MRS. PHILLIPS
Attendance questions? Please email Mrs. Phillips at aphillips@hoover.k12.al.us or call (205) 439-2268
· A parent/doctor note is still required within three (3) days of returning in order to excuse an absence or check-in/out and can be dropped in the excuse boxes in the main lobby or throughout the school. Please include the student’s full name on the parent note.
· ANTICIPATED ABSENCE FORMS - If it is necessary for your student to be gone from school for such events as family events, trips, dance recitals, travel sports, etc., it is necessary for them to complete an Anticipated Absence Form and turn it in within 3 days of the absence, so that the absence may be excused. This form is available on the Bumpus Middle School website, or in the 2nd floor office.
There is a section on the form to be completed, with the reason for the absence, and signed by the parent, then the student fills in his schedule and obtains the signatures of his teachers, and submits it to the 2nd Floor Office for administrator approval. Approval is based on the student's grade averages and current attendance record. After the signature is obtained, Mrs. Phillips in the 2nd office will enter the absence into INow. Please note: if the student only plans to be gone for part of a day, he or she needs to enter the time of checkout, and get the signatures of only the teachers whose classes they will miss. Also, there is no need to obtain signatures from virtual teachers, (although they should be notified by email of the absence and the form emailed to Mrs. Phillips).
CHROMEBOOKS
CHROMEBOOKS
Students Tip: Make sure your Chromebook is updated.
How to UPDATE CHROMEBOOKS:
1. Click the bottom right corner of the Chrome OS desktop (It shows the time).
2. Select the Settings icon (It looks like a gear).
3. Click About Chrome OS (bottom left).
4. Click Check for Updates.
5. To apply the update, click the arrow icon and select Restart to Update.
You may be able to fix some Chromebook problems yourself. Watch this video for great tips and save yourself a trip to the school and a week of downtime.
BEFORE you consider bringing your Chromebook up to the school for repair, keep in mind a few important details:
The Chromebook repair process will take longer than usual due to the precautions our staff will take to stay safe. This includes a quarantine time period before we pass it off to the technician.
Only critical repairs will be processed at this time (as in, the Chromebook doesn't work and learning can't take place). Unnecessary or uncritical repairs will be sent back to the student.
After completing the Chromebook repair request, you may drop off your device at the front desk during school during office hours.
