Bristow Run ES Panther Press
October 2019
Dear Panther Families,
We are off to a great start at Bristow Run Elementary! Teachers and students have begun building relationships, establishing routines, and creating classroom communities that will set the stage for a successful year of learning together. As administrators, we look forward to working closely with our families to strengthen our school/family partnership. It was wonderful to see so many families out for the annual Block Party and Back to School Nights! We encourage all parents to get involved with their child’s education. Our PTO is always looking for new members and our classroom teachers have opportunities for volunteers. This year we are excited to continue Watch D.O.G.S in support of getting more males involved in volunteer opportunities throughout the year. It was so great to see so many dads, uncles and granddads at our informational session this week! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to administration with any questions or concerns. We look forward to an excellent year serving our school community!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Jeck and Mrs. Ball

One Book, One School
We have kicked off our One Book, One School event with The Wild Robot! All students have enjoyed meeting Roz and are starting to know her and the animals on the island she landed on. Ask your students about what Roz is learning and how she is changing as she gets to know her new home. Save the date to celebrate finishing our school book at an interactive literacy night on Monday, October 28th.
Hello Bristow Run community! We have started the year strong in music with learning parts of the staff, pitches, rhythm. Students are also learning how to play drums and the xylophone! As you may have heard several times in you homes, we were singing this "land is your land" in class. 2nd and 3rd grade classes will perform this song with xylophones and drums. They will be singing to some of the 5th, 4th, 1st, and kindergarten classes.
Chorus has just started and we hit the ground running with some cool warm-ups and started to learn three of the songs we will be doing at our winter concert! The date for the winter concert is TBD as of now but I will be sure to let you know as soon as possible! Thank you so much for accepting me as part of the community and I'm glad that I can make music with your student.
As the new school year begins we've been working on getting aquainted with one another. We've established rules and expectations in PE. The students are working hard cooperating with one another and making sure they are participating at all times. They have demonstrated team work, cooperation and participation through a variety of games and activities.
Over the next few weeks we will be working on the preassessment for fitness testing for the upper grades and continue to build on our locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative skills. Please remember to remind your student to wear the appropriate shoes on PE so they may participate.
In School Counseling lessons we are teaching grades 3, 4 & 5 about having a positive classroom community and the roles of School Counselors. In October we will be doing the same with grades K, 1, 2. School Counseling lessons are taught in the library and rotate with the library encore schedule every four weeks. Students always have the opportunity to check out books at the end of each lesson.
Bristow Run Elementary is designated as a No Place for Hate® school.
- No Place for Hate® is an organizing framework to combat bias and bullying in schools.
- No Place for Hate was developed by the Anti-Defamation League. The initiative provides a model for creating a more inclusive school environment.
- All students will have the option to sign the No Place for Hate School Banner that will be posted in the school.

I want our school to be No Place for Hate®
Code of Behavior Assembly
At the Code of Behavior Assembly on September 19 and 20, we focused on our "Paw"sitive expectations in a game of Family Feud and had some wonderful performers and speakers! Thank you to all of the students chosen by their teachers to represent their classes. They all did a wonderful job, and all the students in the audience did great too! A special thank you to fifth graders Madalyn, Tanner and Brady for helping to lead the School Song, Panther Cheer, and Panther Call and Response Cheer!

It's that time of year again... the 15th Annual Autism Walk of Northern Virginia. This will be Bristow Run’s 3rd year hosting a team to participate in the walk.
