MATH NEWS
Dear Families:
I am sure you have seen many social media posts, articles, and even discussions at youth sporting events on the "new math" being taught in elementary school! It is true, math is taught differently today than it was 10 or more years ago. In the past, math was taught with an emphasis on rote memorization, procedure, and speed. Today, math is so much more! At Carver Elementary School we are working to develop growing, confident young mathematicians who are using skills to solve problems. Each day we are working with your children to help them make sense of math in and out of our classrooms. Over the next few months I am going to be sharing some frequently asked questions to provide families with resources on how to support your child with math in and out of the classroom.
Thank you,
Jennifer Kelley, Math Instructional Coach
FAQ # 1: Why does my fluency matter for my child?
We want our children to be fluent in math. This includes children being flexible with their thinking, using strategies efficiently and in a reasonable amount of time, and being accurate with their answers. These are a way of thinking and will serve our children throughout their lives. Many of the strategies we teach at CES can be used by adults in their daily lives. The main difference is that many adults were never introduced to the strategies that we use in school today. Instead, many discovered them on their own and/or haven't discovered these strategies yet. If an individual is equipped with many different strategies, they have an advantage for solving problems in more than one way! They will have a strong benefit beyond our math classrooms. We want our children to have access to many strategies so they can apply them mentally and use them in "real life."

FACULTY MEMBER OF THE MONTH - MRS. GARNETT
Some things to know about Mrs. Garnett:
This is my 8th year teaching Kindergarten at Carver Elementary School. I am so grateful to
come to work every day and do a job that I truly love. I am passionate about making
connections with my students and their families. I believe that all students have the
potential to learn, grow, and be their very best! I look forward to many more years at Carver
Elementary building relationships with students and their families!
Outside of school I love spending time with my family. Our family loves our adventures to
our home in New Hampshire. We spend time hiking, skiing, and playing games. At home
you will find me reading, in the garden, riding my bike, or cheering my boys on at all their
special events.
STAFF MEMBER OF THE MONTH - MRS. MILLER
Some things to know about Mrs. Miller:
For the last 11 years I’ve been a stay-at-home mom while my husband is in the military.
Rejoining the workforce when we moved to Carver was a goal I’m proud to have achieved.
In 2000 I was able to perform in the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Sydney Australia. My high school chorus was seen, and we were invited to be a part of the ceremonies and events. It was an incredible experience.
My family, friends and community motivate me! I have been blessed to know so many incredible,
hardworking and kind people, that inspires me to strive to be the best version of myself I can be!
I love reading and running (this past fall I completed the Boston half marathon!) I also love to cook and bake.
My husband’s military career has seen us through 9 moves! I have always tried to embody and instill in my family to “Bloom where you are planted” it’s a quote I love as a reminder that we may not be able to always control our circumstances, but we can control our choices and attitude!

ALL SCHOOL ASSEMBLY
SPECIAL VISITORS TO GRADE 5
Mike and Maria Bennett were special guests recently. They visited the 5th grade to talk about their journey in professional wrestling. Topics discussed were to always be kind to others along the way, it's important and okay to fail - that helps us learn, and while fame and success are great, your education is the most important thing to pursue because you never know where life will take you.
Grade 3 Bottle Projects
Ayden Palmer (Macrina/Burr) and Audrey Holmes (Burr/Macrina) presenting their biography projects. Students completed a written report, slide show, and an at-home bottle person. Ayden did Davy Crockett and Audrey did Rosa Parks.
Every Friday is COYOTE Spirit Day
Students and staff all join together by wearing Coyote spirit gear or Coyote colors gray, maroon and white.
