Dear Parents/Guardians:
Human Growth & Development lessons will be presented to all our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students during science classes May 28 - May 31, 2019. We want parents/guardians to be aware of the presentations and when they are taught so there is an opportunity for discussion with your child(ren) at home. Parents/guardians are also welcome to attend the presentation with their child and at any point may examine the curriculum and instructional materials.
6th Grade Human Growth & Development 7th/8th Grade Human Growth & Development Topics covered include: The structure and function of the reproductive system The physical and emotional changes that take place during puberty The importance of personal hygiene Students will be separated into two gender based groups. The boys and girls will not be together for any part of the presentation but will receive the same curriculum and instructional materials. Instructional materials will include a video, powerpoint, and question and answer session. Topics covered include: Sexually transmitted diseases Protective behaviors Abstinence as the only healthy choice Students of both genders will remain together to receive the curriculum and instructional materials. You are being notified of state law 118.019 via school communication prior to the presentations taught at Lane Intermediate School. You may opt-out/exempt your child(ren) from the Human Growth & Development instruction. If a parent/guardian files a written request for exemption with school personnel, the district will honor that request. Your child(ren) will then be placed with another teacher during the Human Growth & Development instruction.
Respectfully,
Lane Administration
