Physical and Chemical Change
What is the difference between the 2 changes?
Physical Change
A Physical Change is a change in the arrangement of the molecules but it does not affect their internal make up.
Breaking glass
When you break any substance the molecules spread out and break apart but still contain the same substance inside of the atoms- no new substance.
Whipping Egg Whites
When you whip egg whites, air is forced into the fluid but a new substance is not produced.
Ice melting to water->steam
When frozen water (ice) melts, it is the same substance in a different form. When vapor is formed, water molecules are forced away from each other but is still H2O.
Chemical Change
A chemical change is a change that results in the production of a new substance which is possible through the breaking and reforming of atoms.
Examples of a Chemical Change
Metal Rusting
The surface of the iron reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide.
Bread Rising
When bread rises, yeast converts carbohydrates into carbon dioxide.
Tanning
When you lay in the sun, melanin and vitamin D is produced on the surface of the sun and enters your body which causes the color of your skin to change.
