Behavioral Adaptations
Migration
What is Migration?
Migration is the relatively long distance movement of individuals, usually on a seasonal basis. It is found in all major animal groups, including birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and crustaceans. Migration helps animals avoid unfavorable conditions. It also helps them find new resources, allows for a year around activity (avoid hibernation), and helps complete the reproduction cycle.
Monarch butterflies
Monarch butterflies are not able to survive the cold winters of most of the United States so they migrate south and west each autumn to escape the cold weather
Snow Geese
Here the snow geese are migrating south to Mexico during the Autumnal months.
Gnus
Flocks of Gnus are seen during their migration trip to Serengenti National park in north Tanzania.
Competition
Results from Niche overlap. Some animals will fight to the death for their resources. Some plants species release toxins into the soil that prevent other species from growing nearby, restricting the space of other species. This adaptation is very common.
