Happy Spring, Trailblazers!
What an exciting and busy week we have had at Discovery! Our Odyssey of the Mind Team took 2nd place in the Division 1 - Problem 4 (Structure Toss) in the Regional Competition held this past weekend. The proud 4th and 5th grade team members were: Ishaan Kar, Sarayu Vadlamudi, Mahi Garg, Sashi Selamselam, Sathvik Vaka, Srihan Hanumanseiti, and Thakshi Alaigh. Congratulations!
Thursday night was the LCPS Makerspace Showcase at the Academies of Loudoun to showcase student makerspace projects. Discovery teachers and student representatives showcased the exciting curriculum integration with technology. Ms. Bradley’s 1st grade class project used literature with coding with Spheros and was presented by Rose Khalf, Evan Lee, and Joshua Swanson; Ms. Putman’s 5th grade class used scratch coding to explain different mathematical equations and was presented by Abhay Sista, Brady Jackson, Abby Coullahan, and Krithi Santhanam; and Ms. Pickett and Ms. Espinosa’s 4th grade class (presented by Bree Hornbecker, Mishu Gaddam, Akash Kollabathula, Drake Morris, and Sarayu Vadlamudi) traveled back in time learning about the Revolutionary War to create timelines using Ozobots and coding, and they also used the 3-D printer to create artifacts that may have been left behind by Revolutionary War soldiers. It was an exciting night of endless possibilities!
Third Grade rocked their musical on Friday night with their performance of “Off Their Rockers” while dressed up as senior citizens. Ms. Heck and Ms. Zumbach did a fantastic job helping third grade find their rhythm and the audience enjoyed solos and group numbers, taking us on a musical journey through the decades from “The Hop” to “Dancing in the Streets!”
On Saturday night, Discovery’s PTO served up some school spirit at a Staff Volleyball Game with Team Painter playing strong, but Team Brown in the end taking the trophy! Fifth graders also joined the fun with a quick game during half time. There was a drawing for a $100 Visa Gift Card, but it has not been claimed yet! If you had ticket #346363, please send an email to Discoverydonationsandevents@gmail.com so you can claim your prize.
If you are the parent/guardian of a 3rd-5th grader, you should have received the Expedited SOL Retake letters by now. These must be returned by ALL students before March 28, 2019. Please make sure you read the letter carefully because it contains many important details, as well as the SOL schedule for this year!
I hope you have a wonderful last week of the 3rd quarter, and don’t forget there is no school for students on 3/29 and 4/1!
Warmly,
Debbie Ragan

Volunteers needed in the Music Classroom
Hey parents! Miss Heck and Miss Zumbach are looking for sharp parent volunteers to help around the classroom. Volunteers would be a huge support during our 3rd Grade Musical in March, along with aiding in the finishing touches needed for class manipulatives to make music more engaging for all students. Let your talents sing in the music room, your help would be instrumental to us!

Lost & Found
Has your child lost a lunch box? Their jacket or water bottle? The Lost and Found area is located right outside of the cafeteria. All items will be donated at the end of each month to a local charity.
Please label your child’s belongings; it’s the best way to be sure it gets found or returned quickly.
