2019 Blaze Bulletin
Week of January 7th - Edition 46
Teachers and staff,
At the inservice on January 7, you will remember that Brian talked about the value of knowing and sharing the history of a school or organization (as a means to truly understand the culture and values and beliefs). We've all heard the words, "We are Blackman!" What does that mean? What are some of the stories that illustrate who we are?
This semester, you will find a section of the bulletin each week that tells a "story" of who we are. Brian and I will be asking some of you to share on specific stories that we know and have heard. You may think of others as well.
If you are asked to share a story, we are just requesting that you write the story of an event from our history - past and/or present. The maximum word count will be 200 words, but you may use any style (narrative/poetry/??). Remember, we are looking for funny, moving, silly, sad, etc memories that illustrate the essence of who we are. For an example, Brian has written a brief story on the overalls! (see below)
If you want to add a story, please just send it to me and/or Brian at any time!

GO BLAZE!
BHS STORYTIME
The Overalls
It was blue. It was orange. It screamed, “Go Blaze!” It was…wait . . . what was it?
In the 2003-04 Blackman High school year, JROTC had an idea: let’s brand ourselves with true Blazewear for our cadets. Our own line . . . but what should it be?
Hmmmm . . . could we even sell some to faculty and staff? T-shirts? Nah, that's been done. Hats? Possibly but not for school wear. What about some blue, orange, & white camouflage pants? Yes! Who needs Realtree when you can have #TrueBlaze? (We were early on the hashtag -- #trending).
Let’s go a step further: we'll sell them to the faculty, but instead of just pants, let’s offer Blackman camo overalls, too! Much applause and Huzzahs!
"These are super cool," they said. "Even in 2019, these will be worn,"they said. #GoBlaze. #WeAreBlackman, indeed.

SPED TIPS
JUST A REMINDER
Overheard a student ask a very pertinent question: "If we(female students) have to wear fingertip length tunics/tops with leggings, why don't teachers?"
Just a friendly dress code reminder to teachers and staff...the dress code for BHS students applies to all of us. Let's all be mindful to set a good example.
TIPS FOR HOSTING A FLOATING TEACHER
Many of you will have a teacher in your classroom during your planning period. Please be mindful of your colleagues. With increased enrollment we have a large number of teachers who are roaming every period. Please be considerate by leaving your room during that class and logging off of the teacher computer so that your colleague can have access.
HELPFUL TIPS:
- Remember, they have no designated space to keep things - is there a small place/desk/area in your room that they can call their "own" and keep some supplies so they won't have to carry everything with them?
- Can they have a small area of a whiteboard to write up a weekly agenda or reminders?
- Is there a part of a bulletin board they can use?
- Leaving the room while they teach gives a floater autonomy and comfort in an otherwise hectic day
- A smile is helpful
