Letter from Principal Nelson
Greetings Cougars!
Don't forget, This Monday is a student holiday. We hope the kids enjoy their 3 day weekend.
Things are going much smoother on campus these days in regards to drop off and pick up, but we would still like to remind all that we are not to park in front of 7/11 during the afternoon while waiting for our students. Thank you in advance for being courteous to our neighbors.
Homecoming Dance Pick up times: 6th grade at 5:45 and 7th and 8th grade at 8:00 sharp. Don’t wait for them to text you.
Speaking of Homecoming, we thoroughly enjoyed everybody dressing up and participating each day this week! We saw twins of all shapes and sizes, students in pajamas, and even got to see our school strut its stuff in camouflage. We love the fact our Student Council came up with these activities and that so many students got involved! Judging from Twins Day, I honestly think the teachers enjoyed it more than the students did. If you want to see evidence of all things homecoming related, be sure to check out my Twitter feed and the website for pics.
Wheelchair Challenge
Archer’s Challenge: On Thursday, school board member Amber Elenz and I will be participating in Archer’s Challenge. This is a great cause, started by one of my former students, that brings public awareness to persons with disabilities. Mrs. Elenz and I will spend the day on campus in wheelchairs in an effort to increase our understanding of the challenges students and adults in wheelchairs face everyday. For more info about the challenge and how you can be involved, visit www.archerschallenge.com
FABPAC
How many of you have heard of the FABPAC? (Facilities and Bond Public Advisory Committee)? If you haven’t, please watch the following video to give you an overview of what has been happening in AISD in conjunction with the FABPAC: https://youtu.be/FT9cGvO6aWc
AISD is seeking input from all community members about what their version of the 21st Century school should look like and will be holding a Community Meeting here at Small Middle School on Saturday, October 15th, from 9:00 am until 11:00 in our cafeteria. This will be a drop in and out session, so you can provide your input anytime during the meeting. AISD is seeking feedback from all stakeholders in order to update and maintain our current facilities, as well as help plan for the classrooms of the future. If you are not able to attend the meeting on the 15th here at Small and want to contribute, then please follow the link below to see when and where other meetings are being held. https://www.austinisd.org/fmp/meetings
Social Media Scare
Students all over the country have been alerted and frightened by the social media phenomenon of clowns threatening schools. Since the very beginning, the APD and AISD Police have been investigating every threat or rumor or sighting to ensure our students and faculty are safe. We take the safety of our community very seriously and have been working with AISD Police and our very own School Resource Officer, Duane Ammerman, to keep us informed if any of the reports reach a cautionary level. After the arrest of an AISD student on Wednesday, we expect the majority of the reports to dissipate as the public is now aware that making threats of this nature will lead to arrests. That being said, if your student is unnerved or frightened by these posts, please have them speak with me, a counselor, or even Officer
Ammerman. Also, please remind your student to be responsible with sharing information and checking their sources before they contribute to the mass hysteria.
Have a great week! As per usual, if you ever have a question, concern, or even a kudos, feel free to email, call, or just drop on by.
