OUUC Weekly Update 10-14-20
News from the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation
Worship Service October 18, one online service at 10:00 am
“It Takes Practice” - Matt Meyer
Our favorite songs, whoever the artist or whatever the style, were created in a strange alchemy of study and inspiration, of strict practice and of letting go. Spiritual Practice is a similar combination of dedication, muscle memory, and perhaps a little divine inspiration. Join us for a musical exploration of learning to risk, building the muscle memory of courage, and the spiritual practice of relationship when things around us are changing fast.
Matt is a musician and worship leader who has led hundreds of services for UU congregations across the country. He has a degree in hand drumming and serves as Director of Community Life for Sanctuary Boston.
Join us for Online Worship.
Listen to sermons here. See recordings of online services here.
After the Sunday service and coffee hour breakout rooms, we’ll gather for a Question & Answer with Rev. Mary and members of the OUUC Board of Trustees to hear their priorities for the year. You can stay online after the service or join us at about 11:20 am using the Worship Service login. We hope you’ll join us.

Book Report
Thank you OUUC and community for responding to the call to donate books at the September drive thru event to the Shelton Correctional Facility. Prison staff transported a pickup and delivery truck full of books from OUUC plus 3 additional pickup loads before the event. The Shelton Warden planned to donate books that did not fit their needs to local non-profits and once their library was stocked, share the books with other state prisons. We did good
Don't know if room this week. Helen Henry suggested we share its success with the entire church.
Leadership at OUUC
Our Leadership Development Team is gearing up to produce a slate of Candidates, to be presented at the Spring Congregational Meeting, for 2 positions on our Board, and 3 on the Leadership Development Team (LDT). We work with so many awesome, generous people and don't want anyone to be overlooked. Please give us the names of those you think would be a good addition. Contact any LDT members with your suggestions: Erik Felch, Karen Jackson, Sharon Love, Don Melnick, and Jen Sabel.
From Rev. Mary
VOTE!
In August, Rev. Carol helped us remember the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage. It is easy to forget that the right to vote was hard-won. This year as voting has begun around the country, we are being reminded of that right and responsibility in new ways. People in Georgia are standing in line for up to 8 hours to vote. People in Texas are traveling for many miles to place their ballots in the one ballot box per county. People in California are seeing unofficial ballot boxes and unsure about their legality.
Together in Spirit Stewardship Campaign
Many hands make light work. Thank you so much to everyone who has pledged already. We currently have 96 pledges, providing 35% of the proposed budget. If you haven’t pledged yet, pledge online or fill in the pledge card and mail it in. Questions? Contact Sally Brennand. Do it this week and celebrate by getting free stuff at the Drive-Through Thank you event at OUUC this Sunday, October 18, 3:00 - 4:30 pm. We would love to see your smiling face.
Ready to build the community of hope and of love,
As we face this bright morning.
We are apart, but we are together.
Offering our love, our commitment,
Our hope, and our prayers,
In service to one another and this world.
It is a new way, but an old way, that we come together in worship today.
(Apart but Together, Cynthia Landrum)
Thanksgiving Pals!
Let’s spread some holiday comfort and cheer this year. We will do Thanksgiving Pals to deliver home-cooked Thanksgiving Meals to those who are alone for the holidays this year. If you are alone this year or in need of a delivered meal, sign up to receive! If you are cooking and could provide a meal to a Pal, sign up to Deliver! Both parties are encouraged to get in touch and to leave kind notes on the porch for the delivery. Sign up here.

In the Larger Community
There is still time to donate to the Pacific Northwest District's Fall 2020-21 Chalice Lighter call! This is your Fall Call for the 2020-2021 church year. It will help support PNWD congregations who are struggling to stay afloat in the wake of the coronavirus tidal wave. On top of restrictions on meeting for worship and the challenges of pastoral care, many congregations are struggling to meet staff payrolls and mortgage payments. We PNWD Chalice Lighters can help alleviate this need. We want to ensure that our congregations retain key staff and emerge from “Stay Home, Stay Safe” restrictions able to continue the faith and justice work so sorely needed in our communities. Make a one-time gift of $20, $50, or $100 online at the PNWD giving page.
The Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan has been released for comment. I recommend you start with the "Online Open House" on the TCMP website. Comments are welcome through October 16. Sign the petition in support, too. - Frank Turner
Volunteers Needed at Thurston County Food - In this season of giving, a variety of opportunities await you at the Food Bank – from sorting donations to preparing food bags for kids or boxes for seniors – with distancing protocols in place. Learn more about how you can be a part of this important community work here. Find out more here.
Volunteer for Food for Kids Wed 1:00 – 3:00 pm - The Homeless Backpack program, located on College Street in Lacey, donates 1,200 sacks of food each week to local school districts to distribute to food-insecure students. I am forming a crew of maximum of 6 people to “prep” food for the bagging teams. Some volunteers will sit assembling baggies of individual serving foods and others will open boxes, unwrap canned goods, and break down cardboard. Got skills with a boxcutter? Ready to wear a mask and hang with your friends? Contact Sally Brennand for more info and to sign up!
