What is a Digital Foot Print? Why is it important?
A digital footprint is a trail of data you create while using the Internet. In includes the websites you visit, emails you send, and information you submit to online media. In an age where everything can be “Googled” and online privacy no longer exists, students have a whole new reputation at stake—their digital reputation, or their digital footprint.College admissions and employers do read your online profiles and they do make decisions based upon information they find out about you online that is why your digital footprint is so important to maintain clean.
My Digital Foot Print
- Instagram:For my instagram I post my photography that I take in my spare time. This impacts my digital footprint by showing people that I can do photography some what well and it tells people that I have a skill in Photography which might be useful for a certain job in the future.
- Twitter: For my Twitter account I tweet things that are going on in my life or things that make me happy. I use it regularly to see what my role models are doing or what my friends are doing. I follow anyone I like. I favorite the things that make me happy or make me laugh. I also re-tweet things that also make me laugh or bring me joy. This may have an impact on my digital footprint because people may not like what I tweet or like and deny me for somethings.
- Linkedin: For my Linkedin account I don't really use it a lot. I used it for school purposes only and I don't use it anymore. This may impact my Digital foot print because I am not trying to contact anyone or look for things with my Linkedin.
- Facebook: For my Facebook account, I rarely use it. When I do I like things that I relate to or what i'm tagged in. I rarely get tagged in things but I tag people sometimes in photo's at family events but not a lot though. I re-post things that are funny/cute or again what i'm tagged in .This may impact my digital foot print by people not seeing that much about me and being curious as to what I do when I have spare time.
Youtube: I do have a Youtube channel I watch videos daily. I have a video posted up on my youtube account of a video edit I made and i'm not that proud of it so I really want to delete it. I use playlists for personal use and other things. This may impact my digital footprint by showing people that I do indeed spend alot of time on the internet and it might not be what they are looking for.
What impact does a digital footprint have on your future?
Some people don't realize that what they say and do online can be seen by others. Governors, Senators, police, teachers, and other public officials and employees have lost their jobs due to their risky online behavior.
Students have been kicked off sports teams and even out of college for posting pictures of themselves doing or saying inappropriate things online. Some young people have even been arrested and had to register as sex offenders for sharing inappropriate images over the Internet via computer and text messaging. And don't think this only happens to people that live far away, because I am telling you about things that have happened recently, locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally.
What can you do to continue to improve your online identity?
Guard your privacy
Protect your reputation
Know that nothing is private online
Assume everyone is watching
Apply the "Golden Rule"
Watch the clock - In other words, don't live your whole life online, get out and do something!
Choose wisely - not everything online is good for you
Don't hide behind your screen name
Think about what you see - don't believe everything you see online
Be smart and safe!
