What does it mean to be an Expeditionary School?
HCC follows the EL (Expeditionary Learning) Education model. Desiring to provide students with engaging hands-on, personally relevant opportunities, the HCC founders determined that a school built on the principles and best practices of expeditionary learning would be the best fit. EL Education principles form the basis for HCC’s learning model. With roots in Outward Bound and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, expeditionary learning is a discover-by-doing educational program that engages children in collaboration and innovation. Parental and community involvement are built into the educational model. HCC’s approach to expeditionary curricula will link real-world issues with challenging project-based learning. HCC will encourage students to investigate and solve socially relevant issues and affect meaningful change in communities outside the classroom.
However, due to their expanding initiative focusing on urban schools, EL Education is currently unable to extend official network status to Hayden Canyon Charter. While HCC is not a part of the official network, EL Education enthusiastically supports our charter.
What is EL Education?
EL Education was born out of a collaboration between The Harvard Graduate School of Education and Outward Bound USA. What started as a concept has grown into a movement. EL Education’s mission, now as then, is to create classrooms where teachers can fulfill their highest aspirations and students achieve more than they think possible, becoming active contributors to building a better world.
A common misconception of an expeditionary learning school is that we are an outdoor school where the majority of the learning will take place outside. While we encourage learning to take place regularly outdoors, we are not a school of the outdoors.
Based on the above framework, HCC’s expeditionary educational programming is thereby grounded in the following instructional practices in each area of growth:
Mastery of Core Conceptual Understanding and Skills
Scholarly Habits of Character
Quality Work
Expeditionary Learning Takes Place Everyday at HCC
5th grade students weighed balloons to prove or disprove if air actually has weight. Students learned that General Sherman, the largest Sequoia in the US, is partially made up of air. In fact it takes in over 4 lbs of air per day, which is equivalent to 700 balloons worth of air. Conclusion is, air doesn’t weigh much, but it weighs something.
Student Progress and Accessing Student Grades/Assignments
We encourage parents to reach out to their student's teachers with any questions regarding student progress. Students Winter MAP scores and iStation scores were sent home last week with your child. If you did not receive your student's scores please touch base with their teacher.
Accessing Student Grades/Assignments
Just a reminder that you may access your student's grades and any missing assignment via PowerSchool. Simply use http://hcc.powerschool.com and log in to see your child's grades. If you need assistance with your password email registrations@haydencanyoncharter.org and we will reset your password and login. After viewing the student grades, if you have any questions or areas of concern, please reach out to your child's teacher. Please note: Students work on projects that may last multiple days or weeks, with that being said, grades may not be entered in on a regular basis.
