Carruth House
Whangarei Boys' High School Term 1 Edition 1 2019
Developing Boys into Fine Men
New Year, New Boarders, New ...wifi!
One of the Whangarei Boys' High School values is Whakawhanaungatanga and Manaakitanga (Respectful Relationships). This term we have been having a few discussions on this in Carruth House and how we can show this more in our daily lives. One of our many discussions is that the concept of Whakawhanaungatanga describes the centrality of extended family-like relationships and the "rights and responsibilities, commitments and obligations, and supports that are fundamental to the collectivity." This is so true in Carruth House where we foster the 'brotherhood' in taking a genuine interest in others welfare. Long may it continue!
I thoroughly enjoyed meeting many of you at the Northland Field Days this year. It was great to, once again, see us represented by Jordan in the tractor pull competition. When it becomes an Olympic sport, I am sure you will see him there somewhere. Ex-Carruthians and Old Boys of the school were keen to share the stories of old. It's incredible what some got up to, but I can't share that here ... ...
The new crop of Prefects have stepped up to the mark and are showing the way! They are more than ably led by our Head Boarder Jay-z. Student leadership is a big thing in Carruth House and we really appreciate what the Prefects do for us and, more importantly, how they help serve the rest of their fellow boarders.
We are always looking at ways to improve Carruth House, and the biggest complaint to address from the boarders was the hostel wifi. I never needed it at their age, but it is indispensable now. Over the summer we spent just under $3,000 upgrading it and we now have a much improved system. Money well worth spent say the boarders!!! Let's all hope it continues to work!!!
