Rocket Review
Week of March 6, 2020
March is Reading Month!
March is here and with it comes a month of reading! The March is Reading Month daily calendar was shared last week and is listed below. Each day we have something fun relating to reading. Lots of students and teachers were wearing crazy socks today as we had Fox on Sox Crazy Sock Day! Watch the calendar for more fun activities throughout the month of March.
In addition to our calendar of activities, Morgan students can earn free baseball tickets for reading 4 books in their grade level or Lexile Level. When finished with a book, there is a sheet of paper for students to complete and have parents sign. Turn in four completed book sheets and earn a ticket to the Morgan Rocket night at Jimmy John's field in late May. Parents will be offered discounted tickets as well.
Next week Morgan, and all Utica Community Schools, will be hosting Kindergarten Open House on Wednesday, March 11. This is an opportunity to learn about Morgan Elementary and what a day in Kindergarten look like for our youngest Rockets. Parents can turn in registration paperwork and meet the kindergarten teachers at Morgan. If you have neighbors/friends/family who live in the Morgan attendance area, please share the Open House night information with them. If you have any questions about registration, please call our Main Office at 586-797-5800.
This week Morgan received new soap dispensers in all of the bathrooms. These soap dispensers require a key to access the bag of soap inside. Students can push the bottom of the dispenser and have soap squirt onto their hands. We announced the new dispensers on Thursday morning and are encouraging students to use the soap and scrub their hands with the soap for the entire length of the "Happy Birthday" song before rinsing. Please encourage your child to use our new soap dispensers and wash their hands after using the bathroom, before eating, and after sneezing or using a tissue. Hand washing is one of best ways to keep the germs away.
Don't forget to set your clocks FORWARD one hour on Sunday morning this weekend as we Spring Forward into Daylight Savings Time! This is a sure sign spring is on the way.
Have a good week,
Mrs. Lasky
Spring Forward 1 Hour on Sunday Morning This Weekend!
Jimmy John's Challenge & Hot Wings Challenge!
- Read 4 books at your grade or Lexile level and get FREE tickets to a baseball game at Jimmy John's Field. Students who earn the tickets will be honored at the game!
- Read 3 or more books at your grade or Lexile level and attend the Hot Wings Challenge assembly at the end of the month. Mr. D, Mr. Mirovsky, and Mr. Hall will be going head-to- head in a hot wings eating challenge to see who can take the heat!
Classroom teachers will have the baseball posters for students to track their progress. Reading three books for the Jimmy John's challenge counts as three for the Hot Wings Assembly.

Eisenhower NHS Tutoring
Parents may register their students by submitting a request located on our website:
http://ikenhs.weebly.com/eagle-tutoring.html.
This will allow us to prepare adequate tutors for each subject matter. We ask that parents complete the form by Sunday night each week in order to allow us to organize the correct number of NHS students.
Their goal is to provide a safe and productive environment for both students needing help and our NHS members offering their service. Additionally, a staff member will be on site every week checking in registered students and monitoring the sessions.

Tuesday and Wednesday are in NEED!

UCS News and Updates
Make it Count for Students: Participate in 2020 Census
Utica Community Schools is joining area communities in helping to share information about the importance of participating in the 2020 Census.
Participating in the census survey will have a positive impact on the resources that the communities receive from the federal government, and local programs for students is no exception. The census data is used to determine federal funding levels by determining the number of residents and the needs of the community.
The census also provides funding to address key community needs for road improvements, housing, block grants and student college loans.
Census materials are scheduled to be mailed in mid-March with information on how to complete the questionnaire online, by phone or mail. More information is available at http://census.gov/.

We want to share with you a series of important links that have been created related to student and family health.
Both the Center for Disease Control and the Michigan Department of Health have created fact sheets regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
The information is available at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/index.html - Center for Disease Control and https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/0,5885,7-339-71550_5104_97675---,00.html - Michigan Department of Public Health.
As always, we encourage students to practice healthy habits such as proper hand washing and coughing or sneezing into a sleeve or tissue, as well as staying home when sick, to prevent germs from spreading.
