Every Student Counts, Every Moment Matters!
Message From Principal Webb
Hello families-
I hope everyone is having a nice long weekend due to more snow! I am busy this weekend watching my daughter play volleyball in Dubuque.
FAST testing for our K-6 students is finishing up. These assessments are for reading and math and the results will be shared around parent-teacher conferences in Feb/March.
A sign-up genius will be sent out next week sometime for parent-teacher conference sign up.
We are still looking for families to share at International Night (see information below)! We will also be offering a bus for transportation from Lakeridge to Longfellow and back. Parents must accompany any student to the event.
Finally, if you have an incoming kindergartner or know of someone who does, registration information is found below.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Kelli Webb

International Night
Join the Longfellow staff in celebrating the diversity of our school!! Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 6th, 6:00-7:30 pm. This special event is where your family will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy culture, taste ethnic foods, and see artifacts from all over the world. We are seeking presenters for this year’s event! A presenter will set up a table/booth and is responsible for bringing artifacts, music, clothing and/or food representing your culture and heritage. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your family’s traditions, and we would like as many countries represented as possible. If you’d like to share a dance or sone, along with clothing displays or game spaces, we can make time to perform and display these as well. If you are interested in being a presenter and are willing to share artifacts and/or food from your country, please complete the form below by Jan. 30th, 2020.
Upcoming Events for Longhorns:

The Latest News from the Longfellow PTA:
DINE OUT AT 2 DOGS
You still have time to support our school during our dine-out fundraiser at 2 Dogs Pub, which runs through Friday, January 31! The restaurant is donating a portion of its sales for the entire month to our PTA, but participants must specifically tell their servers that they’re dining there in support of Longfellow. Please remember to mention us, so that our school receives all the proceeds!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
Anyone can join the PTA! We ask for a $10 “goodwill” donation when you join, but this fee is totally optional. Please note that our next meeting has been moved to Tuesday, February 11, 2020, to accommodate for caucus night. We will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Longfellow library. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there!
CARNIVAL TIME
Every year, Longfellow holds a schoolwide carnival that also is our biggest fundraiser. This year’s carnival will be on Saturday, April 18, 2020, so please save the date! The event will include games, a cakewalk, raffles, and a silent auction, as well as food for sale. We will have more details in the weeks to come, but we hope your whole family can attend. The carnival is a fantastic event, and the money it raises helps us provide field trips, classroom and media support, special school experiences, and more!

AIM CARD Message
We hope you and your child are enjoying the new AIM (Access to Information and Materials) student card, which functions as a dual-purpose school ID and public library card for ICCSD students in grades K-12. Most students in grades K-8 received their cards prior to winter break. If your child has not yet received his/her card, it will arrive soon. High school students can use their current student ID or request a new AIM version of their card from the main office of their high school without charge.
The most obvious benefit of the AIM card is that your child can check out three items at a time from each of the three libraries -- Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty -- without fines or fees. As you may or may not know, there are other features of the AIM card as well. Two online resources your child can access are OverDrive, a database which provides access to ebooks and audiobooks, and Kanopy, a database of videos. As in all cases when using the Internet, we encourage parents to be aware of and diligent in supervising what their children are accessing online. If at any time you have questions about the AIM card or its features, feel free to contact your child’s teacher librarian or one of the public libraries.
Our public libraries have been thrilled with the increased visits to their buildings and usage of their collections in the first month of the program. The AIM card is a great way to promote and celebrate literacy in our community!
