What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
It has been a while since I have been able to share a review! I have been sucked into Sarah J. Maas's world since mid-February and have no regrets! It was a little nerve-racking to start because of the size of each book, but all books were quick to read (except March Madness slowed me down a bit ). Sarah J. Maas is great at setting the scene and allowing you to get to know each character. You will definitely get immersed into this faerie world, the different courts, and war. By the end of the book, you are going to want to visit the Night Court and become all of their friends. I enjoyed this so much that I had my husband download Libby and start listening to this series in the graphic audio version. It has been fun to book-talk with him and get his perspective. I hope you choose to check it out!- Kellie
Imagine "Rosemary's Baby" meets "The Shining" and you have Lisa Unger's "The New Couple in 5B"! This mystery thriller is sure to please fans of suspense teetering on the edge of Horror!
"Rosie and Chad Lowan are barely making ends meet in New York City when they receive life-changing news: Chad’s late uncle has left them his luxury apartment at the historic Windermere in glamorous Murray Hill. With its prewar elegance and impeccably uniformed doorman, the building is the epitome of old New York charm. One would almost never suspect the dark history lurking behind its perfectly maintained facade. At first, the building and its eclectic tenants couldn’t feel more welcoming. But as the Lowans settle into their new home, Rosie starts to suspect that there’s more to the Windermere than meets the eye. Why is the doorman ever-present? Why are there cameras everywhere? And why have so many gruesome crimes occurred there throughout the years? When one of the neighbors turns up dead, Rosie must get to the truth about the Windermere before she, too, falls under its dangerous spell." ~Goodreads.com (3.67 rating)
Happy reading, friends! ~Heather Egan/VPL Circulation Manager
I just finished the romantic suspense novel "Cold Blooded Liar" by Karen Rose. It tells the story of Kit McKittrick, a homicide detective with a traumatic past, as she tries to catch a serial killer. Since the author's last name is Rose, this is my current Adventures in Bookclubbing flower-themed pick. The writing is fast paced, the characters are believable, and the story kept me on the edge of my seat without being overtly graphic. I would recommend it for fans of Allison Brennan and Laura Griffin. The book is the first in a series, it was published in 2023, and it currently has 4.36/5 stars on goodreads.com.
Happy Reading!
Kelly
Spotlight on Library Services: Memory Cafe
Do you have a loved one living with dementia? Help us spread the word about our upcoming Memory Cafe. Within the next few weeks, we will be meeting weekly here at the library for engaging conversations and activities for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. We will serve coffee and fresh baked cookies and provide healthy social interactions to help combat the loneliness, fear and isolation that often accompany a diagnosis of dementia. To learn more, call me or email me at khenkle@vintonia.gov.

Nonfiction Spotlight: "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt
"The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness" is the latest nonfiction title from author Jonathan Haidt. It has topped the New York Times Bestsellers list for nonfiction for the last couple of weeks, and examines the role that technology plays in the mental health of our society's children. Author Susan Cain writes "Jonathan Haidt is a modern-day prophet, disguised as a psychologist. In this book, he's back to warn us of the dangers of a phone-based childhood. He points the way forward to a brighter, stronger future for us all." In the April 21st, 2024 issue of The New York Times Book Review, Jonathan explains that he remains optimistic because 'Gen Z is not in denial. Gen Z is pretty wise to what's going on. They're very aware that they're in a trap. We don't have to push them. We just have to give them a way out."
VPL has "The Anxious Generation" available for checkout in regular type.
