Back To School Information
July 2017
Welcome
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year at Shepton High School! We are excited to welcome new and returning students to Shepton. As we prepare to kickoff the year in the coming weeks, we hope that this information is helpful for your family to gear up for August 21st.
As you are aware, our campus is in the middle of a major renovation. Do not worry, we will be ready to serve and educate every student on August 21st! We have been collaborating diligently with the construction contractors to maintain a positive learning environment for students this year. Construction will continue throughout the school year with an estimated completion in August 2018.
As a reminder, our administrators and counselors are working out of Huffman Elementary until August 4th. Our office hours are 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Please note that our phones have been transferred, therefore you may call your respective Shepton number or extension to reach us, as opposed to calling the Huffman directly.
We encourage everybody (parents, students, and staff) to get involved and support Shepton by joining our PTSA. Shepton's PTSA, under the leadership of Rhonda Snyder, have many great events planned to support our students, parents, and staff at Shepton. For information on becoming a member, please visit www.sheptonptsa.org.
Student schedules will once again be available online. Beginning July 31st, you will be able to log in to the PISD Parent Portal at https://parentviewer.pisd.edu to complete required forms necessary for you to be able to obtain your student’s schedule. On August 8th, all schedules will be released for you to view and print. By setting up and updating your Parent Portal account you will have access to your student’s grades, attendance, assessment information, and Shepton eNews. If you need technology assistance, please contact the help desk at tsos@pisd.edu or (469) 752-8767.
We are delighted to host the following opportunities to get students acclimated to Shepton. On Wednesday, August 9th, between 9 am and 2 pm, we will open the building for our annual Stallion Stampede where all students are able to walk their schedule, pick-up and/or purchase school supplies, purchase spirit wear, request a school locker, get familiar with the campus, and see their friends. On Saturday, August 12th, from 9 am to 12 noon, we will host a Freshman Orientation. This is an optional session for students only, organized and lead by our sophomore PALS and STUCO students, designed to connect our newest Stallions with resources, information, fellowship, and tips for a successful freshman year. This is a wonderful event to help students adjust to high school and feel at home at Shepton.
We are dedicated to providing a positive environment to serve each student. We value and appreciate your partnership as we work together to allow your child to reach their full potential. We look forward to seeing all students on the first day of school, Monday, August 21st!
Go Stallions!

Schedules & Stampede
Once again, our schedule pick up procedure for the 2017-18 school year will be done ELECTRONICALLY! Beginning July 31st, 2017 parents can log into their MyPISD account to access, update and complete contact information, student health information, select restrictions, and electronically sign emergency forms and other renewable forms to begin the 2017-18 school year. Schedules will be released on-line and made available for all students to print at home on August 8th, 2017. Once students have printed their schedule, they are all encouraged to come with their schedule to Shepton’s Annual Stallion Stampede on August 9th between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. They will be able to pick up supplies ordered from our PTSA website, walk their schedule, and meet up with their friends after a long summer break! Please note that if there are fines/books owed, immunizations that need updating, or an address that needs verification, the online schedule pickup screens will prompt you to visit the front office of the school your student attended last year to take care of the issue before you can access the 2017-18 schedule.
For families who need computer access in order to complete the electronic registration process, please be aware that computers will be made available in a Shepton computer lab from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 9th.
The following will be available during the above Stallion Stampede date:
Shepton Club Fair
Bus Transportation Information Station
Yearbook Information Station
Food and Nutrition Services (School Lunch)
PTSA School Supplies Distribution
*All students should bring their schedules on the 1st day of school, August 21st, 2017.

Counselor's Corner
The Counseling Department hopes that all of our students and families have a very safe and restful summer vacation. We look forward to welcoming our returning students as well as our new incoming 9th grade students in August.
Schedule requests were made available through Parent Portal in May and students should check to ensure that their schedules are correct. There will be a Counseling Table in the foyer during the Stallion Stampede where schedule change forms may be picked up. Once the forms are turned in, the counselors will work through all of the schedule changes, and will ensure that they are taken care of as quickly as possible. No schedule changes will occur during Stallion Stampede.
If you need to contact the Counseling Office at any time during the year, feel free to call us at 469-752-7615.

Backpacks & Lockers
We do allow students to carry backpacks to their classes. Therefore, the need of a locker is significantly reduced since students can carry their belongings throughout the day.
Carpool, Parking Permits, & Traffic Info
In an effort to ensure that all students arrive and depart school safely, please be sure to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Use the parking lot on the south side of the building and carpool lanes only. Do not enter the bus lane.
- Refrain from dropping students off on Plano Parkway or across the street. It is extremely dangerous for students to cross six lanes of traffic.
- All students who will park a vehicle at Shepton MUST purchase a parking permit. Permits can be purchased from the attendance office window for $20 beginning on the first day of school. Parking violations are taken seriously and are strictly enforced.
*** Given our renovation, we are working through carpool logistics. Our bus lane is permanently being moved to the west side of the building. Students that ride the bus will enter and exit the building through the cafeteria. We will provide a separate communication in the coming weeks pertaining specifically to carpool, traffic, and parking. ***
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the Shepton weekly e-mails? Join eNews @ http://elist.pisd.edu
How do I get the PTSA weekly e-mails? Visit the PTSA website http://sheptonptsa.org/wp/ to join the email list.
What are the school hours? School starts at 9am and ends at 4:15 pm daily. The building opens at 7:45 am. Students may wait in the cafeteria or attend tutorials.
How do I check my child out during the day for an appointment? If your child has to leave school during the day for an appointment, please have your child bring a note to the attendance office before school. We will sign the note so he/she can be released from class and report to the office at the appropriate time. Your child will need to bring a doctor’s note to the front office upon returning to school. The state requires us to have a doctor’s note on file when a student is gone for part of the day for a doctor’s appointment. Your child has 3 days to turn in a note. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.
Where is the cafeteria menu? The menu is posted on the PISD website and in the cafeteria.
How do I bring lunch to my child? Lunches may be delivered to the attendance office. Please come to the attendance office when you enter the building. If your child knows you are bringing your lunch up please have them pick it up in the attendance office on their way to lunch. Due to federal guidelines (FMNV), you may only bring your own child lunch, and we do not allow for students to have food delivered from restaurants.
What if my child left something at school, what is the policy? Please tell your student to report to the Lost and Found. Is your child missing a lunch bag? Gym clothing? Electronics? Check the lost and found located in the Student Center (next to the gym).
Does high school have early release? Yes, during the week of semester exams at the end of each semester. Shepton does not have any other early release days.
How do I get on to Parent viewer? Parent Viewer allows you immediate access to your child’s grades, and can send you an email alert if the grade drops below your expectations. Go to the http://parent.mypisd.net. You will need to know your student’s ID number and enter exact names and email addresses. We can’t release this information in the front office. You will have to get the ID # from your student. This info is on their schedule. This site will walk you through the required steps. **Prior to schedule pick up you must electronically sign all PISD forms in parent portal: emergency card, truancy, health, policy guide, etc.
What do I do if my child is sick? If your child is sick or will not be at school for any reason, please call the Child-Safe line at 469-752-7600, and choose option #3. Please leave your child’s name (with the spelling of their last name), their grade level, and the reason for their absence. When your child returns to school, they need to bring a note to the attendance office specifying the date and reason for their absence. Your child has three days to turn in a note (to avoid an unexcused absence). A parent call does not excuse the absence. We must have a parent note.
**If your child gets sick will at school, they should ask for a pass from their teacher and then go to see the nurse. Only people on the emergency card can pick them up from school. Be sure to double check and update this information in parent portal.
What if I arrive late to school? If your student is arriving late to school in the morning, they should come to the attendance office and sign themselves in. Students should bring a note giving a reason for their late arrival.
How can my child attend tutorials? Tutorials are a great resource for all students regardless of the grade they are making in the class. You can receive a little more help, ask questions, prepare for tests, etc. To attend tutorials either obtain a pass from your teacher the day before you plan to attend, or provide a note from parents. Please follow teacher’s tutorial schedules as they may have other duties or meetings on other days of the week. You may also attend another teacher’s tutorials if needed. Talk with the teachers about this possibility. It’s a good idea to bring questions to ask.
What to bring the first day of school? Bring a backpack, pencil bag, pencil/pen, and a spiral notebook to school on the first day. Beat the traffic and leave a couple minutes early.
Medication: If your child needs medication at school contact the nurse prior to school starting. Students are prohibited from carrying medication with them at school. If you have specific questions or concerns on this topic, see the nurse.
