Have students put their book into a sheet protector and highlight the information that they can later transfer to their data collection sheet.
Research Materials for Information Writing
When we summarize information during reading, we pull out the most important information and put it in our own words to remember it. Each bit of information we encounter adds a piece to the construction of meaning. For this reason, it is essential that our students are reading materials that are easy- not independent but easy. This way our students are accessing comprehension as opposed to working to decode. Below are some apps and websites to provide further access to texts by providing texts at various levels, with purposeful modifications as well as ways to ensure reliable information.
Readability: Cleans up online articles to make it easier for students to read.
SpeakIt!: Reads text for students in the chrome web browser
Google Dictionary: Double click on any word in the web browser to define it.
Notes Anywhere: Allows students to create and leave annotated sticky notes on websites
EasyBib: Helps students cite evidence and determine if the website is reliable.
Text Compactor: Summarizes and Simplifies Text
