National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) - Earth Science Fields
A REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of a host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where the student works closely with faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. They have REUs for the earth sciences, polar programs, and ocean sciences.
The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship, established in 1987, is a highly competitive national fellowship program that provides recent college and graduate school alumni with the opportunity to gain a Washington perspective on key issues of peace and security. Twice yearly, the fellowship’s Board of Directors selects a group of outstanding individuals to spend six to nine months in Washington. Supported by a salary, the fellows serve as full-time junior staff members at the participating organization of their choice.
Fellows receive a salary of $3,200 per month and health insurance, plus travel expenses to Washington, DC. The program also provides $1,000 per fellow for professional development to attend relevant conferences or meetings that could cover travel, accommodations, and registration fees, or to take a language or policy course. The program arranges meetings for the fellows with policy experts and social networking events with alumni. Fellows also receive mentoring from a board member and a former fellow.
